Man. I attended the original widow maker here in Draper, Utah back in the early 80's.

Just like trials, hard enduro and freestyle, hillclimbing has really evolved...whole other level!

It really has progressed to another level! Most of the bikes are run on pump/gas bikes, and those are KTM 1190s, GSXR750s or 1000s pushing between 100-180 hp. The bikes running nitro methane 4 cylinder motors are pushing 200-350 hp. They are all insane, but the top fuel bikes are just so violent, expensive, and quick.

As sketchy as hillclimb can be those boys must have some counterweight between the legs to race each other side by side, fucking hell!

How much time difference is there on average between the 450s and the noisy fuckers?

Yeah no kidding! It gets pretty crazy when there is two 70+ HP 450's lined up to go as fast straight up the rough stuff as possible.

And it depends on the hill layout. On more motocross-style hills with less slope and more turns, the 450's perform well. But it's hard to beat the sheer power those Open bikes put out on the longer and steeper hills. Most of those nitro bikes don't even need to go past half throttle on some of the hills!

Just wondering, how much rear wheel travel does one of these beasts have?

Just how motocross tracks have evolved over time, hillclimbing has evolved as well to keep up with bike technology and the more talented riders these days. That's one of the reasons we're calling it motoclimb, it's changed into something totally different and still gnarly!

And the wheel travel is about the same as most motocross bikes. Weusually use the same suspension, just tune it way differently. Now the French bikes on the other hand...

Damn! That was dope!

So, Im guessing motoclimb is a new direction, or alternative, to traditional hillclimb?

It somewhat is, and somewhat isn't. The goal is to make it more accessible to the average rider, ie someone who rips the track every weekend but might not be willing to invest in a set of extensions just to do a one-off hillclimb event. By having a stock length verticross, it allows guys to get a taste of what it's all about and just bring their track or trail bike out to race. Not all of the events have big step ups and jumps, there are still quite a few more "traditional" type races, which is what the core of the sport still is. But, some venues lend themselves well to the faster, less technical type of hills, plus that allows guys to showcase a different type of skill than you would normally see.

It's insane how much the sport has been elevated in the last few years, runs that would have won just a few years ago probably wouldn't even crack the top ten now, and everyone is only getting faster. Almost all of the top guys are riding moto consistently, and I think it's showing in the modern style and aggression. You have to be absolutely perfect from start to finish to have any chance of winning now, one bad kick or little bobble and you're dropping way down in the standings.

What JM485 ^^ said, but as a promoter, I'd always have to explain the sport as motorcycle hillclimbing to sponsors and such, because Pikes Peak, ATV hillclimbs, and other forms are more recognizable on the internet. Go look up #hillclimb on Instagram and good luck finding an actual hillclimb bike. Also, lots of motocross guys think of hillbilly hillclimbs when they hear about motorcycle hillclimbing, it doesn't have the best reputation. But come to one of our races one day, and lots of our top Pros have three race bikes under their tent that look the same, but three different powerplants.

Motoclimb is just part of this 100+ year old sport rebranding it's image for the mainstream and industry sponsors. It gives us a specific identity and chance to "start over."
