First off I am not talking about what racing sound is better because I know a lot of us more experienced people (AKA old) still like the sounds of two strokes over H-D sounds coming from the MX track.

My question is if your neighbor was going to be riding on his property and in this situation you are within ear shod which sound would be the least offensive to you? Not talking about opening up a track but some basic trail riding. Due to the landscape there are a handful of neighbors (quarter to half mile away) that will be able to hear it. Can't imagine it being more than 30 to 45 minutes a few days a week. It will be more more low to mid range riding with only a few wide open sections.

I HATE the sound of a 2 stroke that is ringing up and down... especially 85's and clapped out 125's.

Hmmm a fart or a chainsaw. Tough choice when it comes to a neighborhood.

I'd rather hear a four stroke.

Or new KTM 2 strokes. Those barely make a sound.

Love the crisp sound of a well tuned two stroke. Four strokes makes my ears bleed...

This is obviously a trick question to draw out Vitards under the age of 18.

As much as I'm down with two strokes, the sound of the start at a 450 national stirs the soul. Roar>buzz. As far as getting away with your backyard track, 2t is obviously better.

There is no worse sound than a squid on a clapped out 2 stroke. So I guess I would need more info before I answer.

I think a good sounding bike is a good sounding bike. I've heard shitty two strokes and shitty four strokes. But OP's question was if you had to hear a bike while in your house (aka, someone else riding near your house), what would you rather hear. I'd pick a four stroke.

I actually agree with the second part, especially about 85's. Not that 150F's sound any better, but 85's just sound weird. A nice 125 is a sick sound though, and a finely tuned 250 gives me absolute wood.

Four-strokes can have a cool sound, just depends on how they're being ridden. 250C rider on the rev limiter doing butt whips all the time - sounds like shit. 40+ vet lugging his 450 in third gear the entire track - puts me to sleep.

In the case of trail riding, I would still think a 2 stroke would be quieter / less annoying to neighbors, as long as the 2 stroke isn't running a shorty silencer or the rider revving the piss out of it. most of the time on trail rides youll be a bit lower in the rev range because theres less room to really open it up, unless youre a killer woods rider. 2 stroke with a stock or full size aftermarket silencer and there should be no issues.

For me, I wouldn't care which one you had, as long as there weren't any kids with cobras riding your track.

Have to say last time I was frequenting practice tracks the 4 strokes the average guy would be riding sounded absolutely terrible. Mostly because of the way they were being ridden I guess combined with a bad muffler and jetting. I've seen a few at freestyle shows too that just sound like crap. On the other hand most pros 4 strokes do sound good to me. It was a lot simpler though when it was all 2 strokes that's for sure. Worst case they just needed some packing.

Was thinking about this age the other day... We're entering a new generation, one where most has never seen an SX or National with 2 strokes. It's sad.

Someone born in 1997, doesn't remember any races before 2000 to 2001 - when 4 strokes took over. That kid would be 17 today.

2 stroke for sure, loud 4 strokes besides being annoying carry such a long distance. On my property two stroke sound drops off significantly with a little bit of distance.

As the OP mentioned in the post ... a 250 2 stroke with a Q silencer seems would be the best option ...

Any time I hear a four stroke in the distance, I think of a quad, and not the jump quad. Personally for me, nothing beats a perfectly tuned 2 stroke of any size.

I love the sound of a 2 stroke absolutely screaming, but I actually really like the sound the 4 strokes make when they are clicked into gear and idle off slowly. Not sure how to describe the sound it makes but I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about

4 stroke sound carries way further but its less piercing than a 2 stroke, i have to agree that a novice rider on a 85,125,250 2 stroke sounds like crap, worse than a 4 stroke. but a pro on a 125/250 is an absolute eargasm
