Has anyone tried out the new Pirelli scorpion back tire?? I'm tired of dunlops wearing out way to fast. I've been using the Dunlop mx52 in the back and 32 in the front. Dunlop 32 in the front is a really good tire but the mx52 wears out way to fast
The Shop
Also, my Pirelli's last longer than most comparable tires.
So far I have over 12 hours on my Michelin Starcross 5 mediums and they are the best tires I have ever been on. The wear is almost unnoticeable as well. That is combined riding between track and rocky desert. The only thing with these tires is you have to use way higher air pressure than I am used to using for them to hook up best and for the knobs to not roll in corners. I run 14-15 psi front and 13-14 rear. I think Pirelli has been recommending higher pressures with their newer tires too. Maybe Team Green can verify that.
The Bridgestone ,Kenda and Maxxis tires always seemed to last longer but didn't hook up that great. The Dunlops don't last very long but they perform better in my opinion. The Pirelli's were my least favorite that didn't seem to last very long or hook up well but that's just a personal opinion. It just comes down to are you looking for performance over longevity or vice versa. As far as it goes I think the best of both worlds would be a maxxis they have a decent life and hook up fairly well.
I have been disappointed with every Pirelli I've tried
My go to front tire was the Scorpion MX32. I have since switched up to the Scorpion FIM Pro MX32. The knob configuration is different than the MX32. I prefer the FIM MX32 over the standard MX32.The FIM Pro is a directional front tire.
For the rear I like the MX410 mud / sand tire, Scorpion MX32 and the ExtraX. I am waiting for my local shop to get FIM Pro Scorpion MX32 rear.
The ExtraX works really well on tracks that start out soft in the morning ( practice and 1st moto) and get hard packed towards the afternoon.
For tracks that stay softer throughout the day I will mount up the MX 32 rear
The bike is a 2006 RM250. I run between 12 -14 psi.
I've used Dunlop, Michelin, Bridgestone and Maxxis.
I have been running the medium rear and have 14 hours on mine and have yet to flip it around. Great grip and works very well in every condition.
I still love my 403/404s when it is hardpack... definitely give up some in the morning though.
Pit Row
Ran three MX races and two Off-Road races on the same rear, it has held together very well, but again apart from two small sections during the Off-Road races pretty much all riding has been done on some soft terrain that is not eating up the tyre.
My wheels are currently at the shop getting a set of MX 32 Mid Soft's on ready for a 4 hour cross country Sand / Desert race I have coming up next weekend here in Aus.
I am having the used MX32 Pro put onto my spare wheel and will be trying to find some hard pack / dry tracks to ride on so I can see how it hooks up and how long it will last.
The Standard MX 32 Mid Soft I love, even on a dried up track, they grip on anything, but get chewed up real fast as soon as it gets dry from my experience. Hoping the Pro will hold in a little longer on the dry hard stuff.
I prefer the FIM Pro over the MX32.
Loved old Starcross MS3 but new 5 soft isnt really that level and wears fast.
Pirelli Extra goes long way and good on hard dry tracks same as old Michelin MH3.. but
they are not really any good on sand.
Works really well in the soft and the hard and everything in between.
I was really impressed. The soft did wear really quick. But I wouldnt run that again if I had the option of the medium.
