So was visiting my dad and figured I'd try a new track out at his request (Switchback raceway in PA). Was hitting the big finish line table must have found the slickest spot on the track right before the jump face and bike went sideways while my ankle went the other way. Rode the rest of the day, came home worst ankle pain I've had in awhile coupled with some good swelling and bruising. Finally saw the doc, partial Achilles rupture, waiting to see what ortho/pt recommend. Anyone have this injury before? What am I in store for recovery time? Eating me alive I a) wont be riding for awhile b) likely gain a few pounds not being able to do my usual morning runs.

Cast it now! Toe pointing forward. I used an old walking cast with an air bladder, but too late in my recovery.

landed from a not so big table, just a little long and had my foot just a bit back to far on the peg and didn't have my ankle muscles ready or something? Nothing was too extreme but all three contributed to a major "stretch" of my Achilles. No way could I ride another lap - yours might not be as bad, I was done. A month before Mammoth!!

Took waaay longer to heal than I expected, like six months! I think I aggravated it once and didn't treat it with the respect I should have, I tried riding too soon and didn't cast it for a month or so. I needed to put that thing in a cast right away pointing the toe taking all stress off Achilles. I didn't really figure that out until I did a little research after never seeing a doctor.

I read there's a school of thought that avoids surgery with that method for complete tears of the Achilles.

What you really want to hear though is that I have to think to even remember which one it was, can run fine and I've over jumped stuff way way worse since with the no issues. I think I really just brain farted and forgot to strengthen my ankles when I landed from a basic jump. Looking for a thread and found this and wished someone told me to take an Achilles injury more serious than I did. There no joke.

Did an alltime stupid move. Went to a new track with a buddy and on the warm up lap was following him around trying to learn the track. He takes off about 3/4 of the way thru the first lap and we are in 4th gear and he hits the quad. For some reason i chop the throttle and I'm airbourne 4th gear on a 450. I realize I'm not going to make it so i pull hard on bars and panic rev. The bike comes to a complete stop on the face of the last jump. Thought i had severely sprained ankle since i had brand sg12s. Loaded up not even completing one lap. The lady at the gate felt so sorry for me she gave me a raincheck. I felt like an idiot to crashing on the site lap. Next day realized i had pools of blood under skin so I went to patient first. They said i needed to see an ortho so i made an appointment the next day. The next day went to ortho and they gave me a short air boot. Had to get a mri that was a week out. Got mri and a foot specialist called me frantic the next day. told me i needed to come in immediately. When in and he said achilles was torn almost completely thru and the wheelchaired me around facility and cast me up toes pointed down.

I was cast for 6 weeks. Then long boot air cast for 8 weeks. Then 6 weeks of pt twice a week. They recommended 12 weeks of pt but blue cross blue shield would not cover it. lol. Just had enough confidence to get back on bike August 3. 9 months and 2 days after injury. I lost 2cm of calf muscle and gain maybe 5 pounds. Still gaining strength in calf but have to take weightlifting easy. haven't hit any big jumps or better yet taken any hard landing yet. Balance on bike is also a little off but it still feels good to be back on bike. Even if its only 2 rides.

Over jumped a table top last summer. Torn achilles. Surgery and off work for 4 months. 6 months full recovery. Better chance of full recovery with surgery. Good luck.

I just had an achillies repair, ruptued it again the next day, after waiting 4 weeks the wound became infected, after another 4 weeks the infection cleared and they repaired the achillies again.
Two weeks later i had a skin graft to cover the hole.
Now 2 weeks later i am waiting for graft to heal before i can start physio rehab.
Probably another 5 weeks before i can start walking with a single crutch then another 3 weeks start walking.
Possibly a total 20 weeks off work.
I have lost wieght cause its a hassle to get to the pantry☺☺☺☺

Although i am sure i am the acception.
Get well soon.

I cased a Table top and mine snapped. Had a good surgeon, been just over 2 years now and it is as good as new. I was back riding in 7 months.

Had a complete tear in March of this year. Surgery 6 days later. It sucks giant donkey balls. Still limping. It's still really tight. It's an injury that takes a long time to heal.

Cased and over-watered triple at Starwest back in 04. Felt like the back of my ankle was being held to a blow torch. Partial tear. No surgery. Took 33 weeks till I could walk comfortably. Now after i get off work, eat, sit on the couch for a few hours it is super stiff when i get up. I can tell my age is catching up with it.

I'll just chime in with the others and note that it's a really long recovery, compared to what you might expect. I was a lot younger and didn't follow directions, which probably didn't help though

Yikes your guys stories aren't making me feel any better. Mri is tomorrow, fantastic military insurance (lol) will probably be a bit before I see ortho or pt, feel like I should be in a boot. It seems to be doing a little better everyday, I can use that ankles toes to put pressure on a towel or something, just throbs a lot and by the end of the day in some pain. Hoping for no surgery. Thanks for all the replies and to those still recovering best wishes and speedy healing.

Just wanted to share my experience. I fractured my heel earlier this year. I over flexed my ankle and my Achilles ended up ripping my heel bone almost in half! My Achilles was also slightly ruptured (undiagnosed but I know it was, it still bothers me to this day). Anyways, my Achilles has been bothering me long after the heel injury has healed. It's a rough one to come back from.

I was riding again 14 weeks post injury. If I sit on the couch too long it feels stiff when I get up and walk. Good luck!

Just FYI, I picked up a walking boot for $10 at Goodwill, if you want to get into one without going through insurance. I noticed afterward that they are also on Craigslist for lower than retail.

Yeah check Amazon for an air cast. That's what they put me in. Had to pay 350 from the doctor. 150 from Amazon.

Get it in a boot asap. As much as you think you are helping by doing excercises you are prolonging the recovery. Your Achilles engages for more activity than you think. 8 months before I could walk normal and pain free from simple puncture wounds from a MTB sprocket. I was hard headed and didn't follow Dr's orders b/c I could somewhat walk.

Well it's Sunday Mri is tomorrow morning, I'll reach out to pcm about a boot she told me just RICE it. I'm not doing any exercises just testing if it's a full tear or not as I'm anxious. I have an office job so I sit most the day. I'm a PT student so been taping it with rock tape and doing some research which is unsettling. She offered me crutches but I was honest and said I wouldn't use them like I should (doc was an attractive 2nd leutient lol).

Sitting here on the couch rubbing my wife's achilles, instead of at the races like I should be. I'm hurting worse than she is at the moment. She fully tore her achilles and tore cartilage on the side tendon of ankle, on June 3 at Thunder Valley amateur day. 9 weeks since surgery, and she is gingerly walking around on it now, still has to wear boot for 3 more weeks. Dr says another 4 months before she can even think about MX. I'm thinking it's going to take me longer than that to get myself back into shape.

It sucks.

I'll also add that it took me about 8 months to walk with no limp.

I've been thinking about getting ankle saver foot pegs. Anyone have experience with them?.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I decided to order the air cast boot on amazon (thanks for that!) since by the time my doctor gets my mri results, then I see the ortho it will be a few days at least and then might not get the boot right away, etc. This way I'm ready to go when the doc says wear one. Wish me luck tomorrow on the MRI.

I just outfitted wife's 2015 CRF250 with a set so it's ready when she is. Some pro friends run and love them. Quality product and think they will work well, but kickstarter is hitting extension, waiting for response from PMB. Works if I short kick it, but full kick gouges the kickstarter pretty bad.

Lol. This has been my recent thought process, only been riding 4 years but this sums it up. At what point do you say to yourself, yes I love this but my health and checkbook are suffering cost to benefit ratio.

1st year: Broken collarbone and separated shoulder, partially tore MCL, LCL, PCL, ACL
2nd year: completely tore PCL in other leg
3rd year: ruptured spleen, lacerated kidney, fractured 2 ribs
This year: likely possible torn achilles

Mostly what convinced me to go back to riding instead of racing. At least it's a little safer.

May be a good option after recovery to prevent future injury though.
Wish you the best outcome after that MRI.

Yes it appears you ride as good as me, although it has taken me 40 years to be that skilled.

This current injury has cost me $30,000
In medical and wages.

Welp good news today, no tears confirmed via ultrasound and Mri. Just inflamed. RICE and a few weeks off was all that was prescribed. Thanks to everyone and best wishes to those still healing.

Switchback's new layout is AWESOME. So easy to tell when a professional track builder does a track, versus a headstrong hillbilly with a dozer.

Agreed. Would have been more enjoyable on a 4 stroke though, it's pretty tight not a lot of open areas to carry momentum to get over stuff on a 2 stroke.
