Moto Gear History Part V: Fox Racing 1974-1989

In this installment, company founder Geoff Fox and his son Greg were nice enough to assist me with research and their thoughts on many of the ads. I hope everyone enjoys it.

It's as though a switch was turned on between 1985 and 1986 for Fox. The ads, the gear designs and their main rider.

Good stuff, thanks!

I visited SoCal as a kid in 1980. My Dad and I went to see Fox who were up near San Francisco if I recall correctly. However they didn't have a shop or anything as they were mail order only. Nonetheless we just knocked on their door and said we were visiting from the UK and that we'd seen their stuff in magazines and thought they were really cool etc.

Instead of telling us to go away because they were mail order only they instead showed us round, made us coffee and made us feel really welcome. We bought some stuff too.

A few years later I ended up being sponsored by Fox in the UK and got my own custom autograph Fox head stickers! I still have some and they're really cool!

Still my favourite gear of all time.

Growing up in the Bay Area, the ruddy delinquent I was, we'd cut school to drive down to San Leandro to Grand Prix Cycles; great to have a NorCal Maico/CZ hop up place to compete with the sludge from SoCal ( Wink ) So, been a Fox guy since the outset.

Fox does not get the credit it should for elevating the privateer team concept. It was pretty cool to get to local races and see the box vans and team guys.

Nor does Fox get the credit it deserves business wise for migrating from hard parts to apparel, thus surviving.

Picked up the poster version on the iconic Fox ad a few years back.

I still have tons of catalogs from the 80's. It was pretty cool growing up just a few min from them and watching them expand. I remember rolling down the isles with a shopping cart and filling it up, good times.

This is some classic Fox gear. Ricky Ryan at Sand Hill, i love this pic. Check out this classic first gen AXO boots. Those things were terrible! Held on by just velcro tabs. Seer goggles, bubble visor and a Jofa, so much epicness.

RJ has some awesome gear to, from back on YZ to his Honda days. I dont think he ever looked that great in his later days in JT
