is worth more that 100 fourth places. I mean for your career. What do you think?

hmm depends.
if you have one guy like herlings that wins everything and you beat him, it might be.
But I think Guillod (usually 4th or worse) had a much better season than Anstie who won a GP.
Could have been different if Anstie had won that GP with Herlings racing and he beat him straight up.

Maybe, but Ill take my paycheck for 100 4th places and I imagine my factory ride salary or close too all day over just one win.

Would you prefer Mike Craig's bank career (and bank balance) or Andrew Shorts/Tim Ferry etc?

I'd take Shorty's all damn day!

I guess a team would take the win, a rider the 100 4th's.
Could it be the reason CR22 hired JG33? Wink

That's a tricky one, we all race to win, everyone of those top riders is out there to with one goal. 100 4th's means that over the course of multiple years / championships the rider was NEVER good enough to get on the podium, that must hurt!

Sure yes, in monetary values, someone like Short is going to be better off than 1 guy that got 1 win once and nothing else. But with money being so poor in general, knowing you get bugger all, would you not trade it for a win? No one remembers who consistently was 4th years later, but winners go in history books,

If 100 is too high, how many would you trade for a 1st? My number has to be in the 20's I think. After that it really depends on the earning potential...

Without question for me, one win over a hundred fourths. I look at it this way. If I were still pitching in baseball, I would prefer to have 10 terrible seasons and 1 good season with a Cy Young. Reaching the pinnacle (without a title) in SX/MX would let me know that for one day, if only one day, I was the best guy on the track.

And to me, that is an irreplaceable feeling.

why is everyone using shorty as an example? He has a supercross win.

100 fourth places, good attitude, and marketability is greater than 1 win if the guy is difficult to work with. See Shorty, Wilbur...and Pourcel

I understand that. I'm not arguing against shorty, I would take shorty on my team all day. What I was getting at is I think people forget that shorty has a win.

Over the last five SX series, fourth place finishes would have scored three second place overall finishes in points.

I would say no. If you only ever had one someone would have a reason to "asterrisk" it. He only won that time because.....

I was assuming we were talking big bike stats. My mistake

Let's ask Josh Grant if he would prefer to have a couple of solo victories over always being a fourth place guy.

For me, it would depend on where you are in your career. If you just turned pro, you are probably going to try and push for that win as had as you possibly can, which you should; that's the whole point of racing. But if you've been a pro racer for 10+ years, you may dial it back a bit and settle for 4th place finishes in order to pay the bills and help insure that you'll have a job from year to year

Ill take the 100 4th place finishes over a single win...

Seriously being the 4th fastest guy on the track year in and year out is to me more than a life acheivement...not too mention worth its weight in gold!

Sort of a similar situation here:

Who had the better career: Grant Langston or Kevin Windham?

There are lots of guys who are in the position to keep riding each year for top-10s because of their one win. Josh Hill comes to mind. No disrespect to the guy, but without a SX main event win under his belt, I'm not so sure he would have had the rides he enjoyed since.

Langston has a 450 championship, but Windham has more wins and more longevity. That one's a little too easy.

Speaking of 80s and 90s 250 supercross Guy Cooper never won a main. still a great champion Bradshaw on the other hand no national or sx championships but many main wins.

who would you prefer to be?

Titles mean more than race wins, alot of riders win races, not many win titles.

After I wrote it I remembered Seattle, but his career has definitely been built on his consistency. Don't think he's been hired as a full threat race or championship guy since lites days and even then...
