Hey guys, for those of you who own a 2012 Crf 450 or are familiar with this issue please chime in.

I just noticed that there seems to be oil coming out of my air box. I removed by filter and noticed a small pooling of oil at the bottom of the boot, and also have noticed some of that overflow leaking down onto the swing arm. This bike only has about 20 hours on it and no major wrecks minus the occasional tip over.

Any idea on what this is?

Yes I know there is the "Race Shop" forum, but I figured I would check here first since there are quite a bit more viewers.

Thanks in advance

It's probably just over oiled.

Too much oil on the air filter will produce a puddle when it runs off.

I have had it happen but it is usually when my bike sits for too long between rides when the garage is hot. Since you are in DC and I doubt the temp is too warm just yet I would guess the filter was just over oiled.

clean the air box, put a fresh lightly oiled filter on and try that,

Any chance you use no toil filter oil?

Did you crash and have the bike at an extreme angle with the motor running? Ive seen this on my bikes when I balled it up and had oil in the airbox after a crash that left the bike almost upside down with the motor running.

This happens because one of the engine breathers goes into the airbox.

Also, you may have overfilled the crankcase... If that's the case, be happy you haven't blown any engine seals...

The valve cover vents to the air box. This can cause engine oil to blow into the air box. A common modification is to vent the valve cover to the ground. I can show you a kit for that, but I would be spamming...

If you address and find that none of the remedies listed are the cause, then you may have a bad crankshaft seal. I had the same problem after an engine rebuild. Was at the track and had alot of oil in the airbox and all over the swing arm. I had never seen that ever. Replaced and inspected the "new seal" and found a little gouge that kept it from seating and sealing properly.

I get this on my 2011 crf250. If the bikes on its side whilst running oil gets through to the air box, happened a few times! Nothing bad tho Smile

Funny you should mention this.
I never had an issue with the aerosol version of no toil. But when I use the liquid version I always end up with a puddle if I let the bike sit for a while.
Not sure if that happens with conventional filter oil.
Not really an issue with oil migration since I put a clean filter before every ride. But kind of annoying because that stuff is hard to remove from the garage floor (unless you use the cleaner)

There is a seal on the crank behind the gear that drives the clutch basket.

This seal keeps the crank oil separated from the tranny/clutch oil.

If it goes bad the tranny oil gets into the crank oil and causes an overfill situation.

This extra oil gets frothy from the crank beating the shit out of oil that is to deep, the cam chain carries. It up to the rocker area .

It will blow out that vent tube into the airbox.

Drain both cases into a ratio rite or similar to check volume and either confirm or eleminate this seal.

Well said hillbilly. You are right on the mark.

Either your air filter is over oiled or your engine oil is over filled.

Ive had it happen in crashes where the bike gets flipped over, and the throttle got stuck wide open while laying on the ground.

The blow by tube splits. If you look between the chain and shock you will see a tube that has a plug in it. If you haven't been draining it occasionally it will fill up and go into the air box. 20 hours on the bike would be enough to fill it.

Had this happen on my crf and had a panic attack when I came back in. Then a friend of mine told me it's because I was upside down in a corner with the bike running. Just took the air filter off and gave it a good clean. Fresh filter and it was never an issue again.
