Cant decide what bike to choose.
Its all hardpack tracks here so a 250f is faster and when i tryed one it was realy fun to, but a smoker is cheaper, easier to repair and realy fun on softer tracks!
Need some pros and cons!

buy the rm250 and this is coming from a 4 stroke guy....bike is way more fun to ride and if your not racing competitively then its a no brainer ...and by the way im a life long suzuki guy and both are great bikes...but the 2 smoker would be my first choice

We have both. I prefer the 2 stroke (RM 250) since it easier and cheaper to maintain. My son prefers the 2010 RMZ 250. He says he fills faster on it but the stopwatch says he is faster on the 2 stroke. I would recommend the 2 stroke.

The thing is that i do compete and im faster on the twostroke when the track is soft but all the local tracks are hardpacked and then im faster on the fourstroke...

However i compete becouse its fun, not to be world champ. So i guess the twostroke is the better choice

You'll be sorry. You compete for fun right? How much fun will it be to watch riders with less ability motor right by you in every slick corner?

If you raced sand tracks or loam that would be one thing but, you don't...

I have to agree, but if money is of great concern that is also a factor that could over rule the four stroke.. I would go four stroke for sure if you have the money, race and like to win!

A two stroke is really not cheaper than a four stroke until the time comes to do major repairs (head, cams, etc). Obviously, an '08 will be cheaper than a '10, but it sounds to me like you would really prefer the four stroke.

Gotta agree with the above statement by WORCS, racing is not fun when you are losing. The fun part about racing is trying to win and be the best out there, so what difference does it make whether you do it for fun or to be a world champ? You still should do everything you can to be up front, and if the type of bike is a choice you have, go with the one that will put you up there.

If you want the silly piece of plastic at the finish line go for the 4 stroke. If you want the massive crowds to cheer you from the fences get the 2 stroke.

Get the 2 stroke and put a flywheel weight on it. Lighter weight, more HP, more torque, cheaper to maintain and it has the better feel of the steel frame.

I agree, and when you do pull off the win (on the 2 stroke) the crowds, the chicks and the spotlight will be all over you! GO for the Smoker !!

BTW I ride a 250f and if I make it over there to race, I will motor by you with my elbows down, knees poked out sitting too far back in full goon mode as you slip your clutch and furiously try to gain traction against my farting pig. moowahhaaahhaaaa moohoowhaaaa!!!!!

Bikes are like women, you always want the one you don't have. Just pick a bike and buy it because inevitably you'll wish you bought the other one. It's human nature I'm afraid. Me personally, I'd by the 2 stroke but that's only because I'm on a 2 stroke kick right now. I bought a 2 stroke after a string of 4 strokes and I'm starting to get the 4 stroke itch again. To sum things up, buy 'em both just to avoid that nagging feeling that you're missing out on something better :-)

i raced all season on a kx250, there are plenty of 2 strokes up here racing so it is no big deal. i switched toa ktm 250sxf and am faster on it.
i say get the bike that will do the job for you. sounds like the 250f is the bike for you.
all my tracks around here are hardpack as well.

exactly, a flywheel weight, PC pipe and silencer, VP Ultimate 2 fuel, and that thing would be sick... Later on, get some gold rims... and you're still not close to what you'd spend on the new RMZ...

I find it hard to believe a flywheel weight makes a significant difference. Your limiting factor is the motor is it not? Is there actual evidence to support that a bike will go faster from A to B with something besides a stock flywheel or are we convinced because the rpm's go up faster when you rev it in neutral.

I gave into the 2-stroke pressure myself and bought a project CR250. I'll admit the bike is a blast, and when it comes to 250 vs 250 there's no reason to get the 4-stroke. But if you race against 450s it is a large handicap. I did a Vet race just after buying it and while I was able to race with and beat everyone on a 450, it was a real struggle. That's sort of fun but also a drag to know you could easily have killed them on an equal bike.

I am in the same situation. I currently have a 08 RM250 and looking at getting a RMZ250. I have a couple of mods on my RM250, including flywheel weight and some mild port work done. The bike is a absolute blast and love it but it is hard work when the track gets slick. I have also never owned a 4 stroke but ridden a few and quite enjoyed it. I am looking for something different as I have been riding 2 strokes for ages now.

Another thing to take in consideration is some local tracks let the 250's race together so a 250 2 stroke would race against the 250 four stroke..advantage? 2 stroke then. Listen to Newmann that does work.

Yep go for the RM. Once you have the thing set up, you can still go fast on harpacked tracks, just have to have good throttle control and technique. It inspires me to keep pushing myself on my two stroke. So much fun and would not have it any other way !!

Far be it for me to point out that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of love for a 250F in this thread. Damn shame the 2/4 cc ratio is so far out of whack. Really doesn't seem to have done a lot for the health of the sport. I do like the way the 250F fills the gap between 125 and 250 2 strokes for someone like myslf, but the reliability isn't there from my personal experiences. Plus, I fin the 250F gets to be boring. Always find myself heading back to the 125 and the 144 when at the track. Love to hear the small bore smoker sing.

What would you say is the easiest bike to ride fast around a track? I would probably say a 250f but that is just a guess. You always hear to sides to reliability on a 4 stroke.

I have a very well dialed in 2008 250SX. 300cc top end, full built motor (bottom and top and Hinson basket), Dick's carb mods, MX-Tech suspension front and rear set up for a 172# intermediate.

Unfortunately due to my recent injury I probably should sell it but it's an absolute 450 killer and it's so easy to ride really quickly. I've never had a bike that has worked so well and I ride a lot of new and modified bikes, mostly 4 strokes.
