I've been around a long time and hate to say this but MX needs some changes to stay current in todays environment......

1. One moto format 20 minutes (after qualifiers)

2. Five Pro Classes

a. 125 cc
b. 250cc
c. WMX Open Class
d. 450 cc
e. Open Class

Clearly you've worked long and hard thinking about this plan.

I would be open to trying 1 moto format but, not with 5 classes. The talent would get far too deluted.

I understand where you're coming from, and some of the ideas are good; but...I'd give up on the WMX and the Open class. Not gonna happen, due to the fact that there isn't much exposure or interest for the WMX class or an Open class. I don't like it either, but just the way it is. I'd like to see the 250 class give up, say, 4 rounds and let them run a 125 class. Don't have to make it an AMA National Championship, but maybe classify it some other way so it could be a points paying championship. Perhaps make it a Pro-Am class so no Amateur riders lose their status for LL's, etc...but can still race some of the outdoor tracks prior to becoming a full time pro. I'd still keep it at two motos per class, but make them 35+2 laps. That's how I'd tweak your suggestions. Like where you're going though...

If you think the average person who casually watches motocross racing on TV wants to watch two 45 minute motos (old school) and cant tell who is in the lead and who is a lapper, your not being realistic. Only core people can get into that....... we need to grab onto the short attention span action sport fans......You guys are always bitchin about lappers, this will help...and keep the racing real........

How many races are good after the 20 minute mark? Its usually a two horse race, if that .........Sorry Bob Hannah but the 30 minute mark has become seriously boring for the average fan..........

The answer is two 20 minute motos plus 1 lap. Having attended at least half of the Nationals each year since 2008, the reality is, the "real action" is nearly over after the first 15 minutes (8 or so laps). However, true fitness still needs to be a part of the equation. I believe this format allows for that. Fan's simply tune out and/or opt for another beer or have to chase down their kids during a 30+2.
Next, we need to bring back the "overall" that actually means something. I certainly understand the effort (and expense) put forth by each team and rider per moto, but if we are to have a two moto format, then the average should still be in play for the overall and for which points are awarded. If not, then don't call it moto 1 and moto 2. It's actually 'Round 1, Round 2" so on and so forth, and the "overall" doesn't mean anything except for rider bonuses.
Wouldn't this also solve other issues such as longer recovery time between motos, time for track prep, better TV coverage, and possibly the opportunity to bring back the WMX? The ladies are relevant folks, and at the pro level, I would venture to say that they can smoke 90% of us on this board!
Just thinking out loud!

I'd be down for qualifying races and one moto format. But 5 pro classes is nuts. Id say 3, max, but even that is a thing of the past. I do think a Super Mini or Schoolboy class has a place at nationals in the future. Those classes are arguably the most popular classes at LL each year. 250A might get a little more attention, but I think Super Mini is a close second, if not on an even plane.

$ 10,000 bikes and $2,000 top ends.........so many opportunities .....limited riding areas, noise issues, injury issues, insurance issues, TV issues, etc. sorry I'm crazy to suggest anything different on a motocross discussion forum....

I'd argue the sport isn't exactly "thriving". Like EastCoast said above, there's a ton of issues plaguing MX across the board. I don't think 5 pro classes is the answer tho.

Three 20 minute + 2 lap motos = more gate drops, more holeshots, less lappers, easier to break ties. After 8 rounds rerack the top ten based on points and have a 4 race, 10 rider "chase". I think this would lead to more action, excitement, and better tv ratings. The sport is only going to grow when the television viewership increases. Better tv leads to more sponsors and more opportunities for more riders. The focus on whose going to "make the chase" will lead to more exposure for the riders outside the top five and will bring more excitement to more of the races.

maybe some of you should just realize that things come and go...including the almighty sport of motocross.

if you think otherwise your just being pretentious about motocross' importance, or being narcissistic by projecting your interests onto the world.

PEOPLE ARE NOT AS INTERESTED IN MX AS THEY ONCE WERE. Thats all there is to it. It's way more organic and ingrained into the culture for a stupid ass format change to make a bit of difference. thats just a naive notion.
