Need your guys input??

So I'm looking to buy and sell a dirt bike to make a little cash, I have had really goodluck in the past with 250 two strokes. I bought a 2006 rm250 for $1550, put $250 in to the bike to get it in running condition and then sold it for $2500. Now I am looking at a 2008 crf250r, and to be honest I have never bought or owned a four stroke. A friend of mine has the same year bike and I know it is a very solid bike. My question to you is when looking at a four stroke, what are some key points to look for on the bike? He told me the bike needs the carb adjusted(that could mean anything) and he told me it backfires quite a lot when running. So basically give me the run down on the good and the bad signs that can be noticed on 250fs, that way if I do go look at the bike I don't put myself in a hole and buy a POS. He's asking $1800 but I'm positive I can get him down to $1300-$1400 by pointing out the need of tires and a few other cosmetic parts here and there. I'll try and post a picture later for yall, but for now I am about to go ridingCool

I wouldn't touch a 7yr old 250f with a 10ft pole unless it still had the original tires on it.

You may want to just stick with doing 2 strokes as the repair cost can get out of hand real quick on an older 250f.
With that said...What you have described is a dirty pilot jet and a bad exhaust gasket and both would be easy fix's, but it can also be bad valves as well and that can cost a lot to fix.

Fixed up, you wouldn't get much more out of it. If you got more than $2000, it would be a success, and who knows how much you'll have to spend.

the problem is you can buy a brand new 14 leftover for 5200 or a used well maintained current 250f for under 4g

Thanks for snapping me back to reality, I think I will most likely pass on the bike and keep looking for two strokes. I do have one more question first though. Say I was able to pick up the bike for $1300, do you guys think I could make my money back and more buy selling the bike as parts? The bike seems to be in pretty good condition, the only issue is I'm worried about the motor.

Listen to the answers you just got. Those bikes are all over craigslist for a reason. Nobody wants them!

You can make some money on four strokes, just not 250F MX bikes. Street legal/taggable KTMs. That's the market. Buy low and sell high. They hold their value pretty well.

stick to selling 2 strokes. for the simple fact that they are super easy an cheap to work on an fix. I hate to say it but also because ur not going to make ANY money on a old four stroke. I have an 08 crf250 its a great bike. I bought it brand new an as long as their maintained they will stay solid regardless of what these dudes say on here. the only situation you run into is issues with the pilot jet getting some dirt in their, an adjusting the valves eventually to make it run right.
