People are idiots....when did looking both ways go out the window? Growing up learning to ride in the desert my dad would, and did, whoop my ass if I ever went across a road without looking first.
Glad it worked out for Ivan. Scary stuff.
Anyone know if the 1x bike is racing at the 250?
I raced this race a week and a half ago, and that sand wash was 5th (or 6th) gear pinned for well over a mile. I had a close call myself when a few quad's happened to roll across the course when I was in 4th. It happens, its a part of desert racing.
Yes Danny Hamel passed away at the baja 500 in 95 the same way, federali (i believe) jeep going opposite race traffic on the course. Head on collision and Danny was in 5th. JCR pulled out of baja, so there will be no 1x bike this year. Still no word on whether KTM or THR kawasaki will be racing. (to my knowledge)
I'll take my chances with the very occasional car in the middle of nowhere, over doubles and triples every single lap. Lol.
Pit Row
One thing to point out though is that Ivan isn't human....99% of the riders out there wouldn't be going near that fast...in fact I'm a fairly fast B rider (I finished 12th overall B, at the national hare and hound I races last summer) and I'll bet I'd be going 20 to 30 mph slower than he was going there (that is tapped out on my yz450, with stock gearing-about 75-80mph...Ivan was probably going over 100mph on that straight away). Desert doesn't seem nearly as scary when you watch a mere mortals POV footage. I watch pro helmet cams, and I can't even believe the speeds.
So if you were to do a desert race, it would look nothing like what you see from Ivan's POV (because you'd be go way slower), so it would be as scary for you.
I saw Colton today- he's already finished one pre-run and is healthy and ready to race Baja in 2014.
