Take it to the local hazardous household waste collection site.

My county has several sites that collect all sorts of bad stuff: oil, gas, antifreeze, batteries, paint, pesticides, florescent tubes etc. It is free to drop the stuff off, they just want to avoid it ending up in landfills or dumped on the ground or into storm drains.

It evaporates.

It evaporates.
I always wash my filter in a coffee can half full of gas and if I leave the lid off the can it will evaporate in short order in hot weather.

Usually I use the dirty gas as a parts cleaner.

Don't do it. Go to a water based system.
Its just not worth the health risk.
Take it to a local disposal place.

And I don't use gas. Use mineral spirits to get the dirt off. Than use dawn to get the oils out. New every time

Do yourself a favor and get some of this:

It's a little more money but my air filters come out looking brand new. If you don't want go buy it, warm water and laundry detergent works great. Just let it soak for a while then rinse with warm, not hot, water.

When I was a kid I would drop a tennis ball in it, light it on fire, and kick it around with my friends. Kids, don't try this at home. If you do, make sure you are far away from a very dry field. Just saying . . .

In other words, don't do it in California.

This is what I do with it. I only use about 2 cups of gas and then I set it out to mostly evaporate off.

Grape has a much better solution though.

i do it on the side of my house with the mower gas-can, helps keep the ants and weeds at bay. if it's bad gas i am a little more generous in getting the filter extra clean

Gas is bad for your filters, it eats away at the foam and glue that holds them together. If youre gonna do it the cheap way, use kerosense

Use No Toil, then you can just pour it in the yard.

Who the hell keeps kerosene around? It's not the 1920's where we're lighting our house with lanterns.

I've cleaned air filters for years with gas and while you're right about it eating away at the glue, it's not a very fast process. I buy two air filters every year to year and a half and don't have any problem.

The only prob wit the Maxima stuff is it has a really strong smell. Not really a bad smell, but really strong. After washing a few filters outside and allowing them to air dry in my garage, the entire house stank for a week. The PJ1 stuff works the same and has a much less persistent smell.

I have a discount code for Oxy-clean as well. My maid takes her job seriously and is sponsored by them so she hooks me up.

No way it's cheaper. Not here. As soon as I heard Oxy Clean did the same as No Toil, I switched. I get a huge tub of Oxy for less than a small bottle of No Toil cleaner.

Yes I have used PJ1. It's not bad. But you are comepletly right about the stench. If it gets in your clothes you better plan on washing them before you go somewhere. It is potent. Like you said it doesn't smell bad, just strong.

I switched to the Evolution about four months ago. It has a weird consistency, really watery and...green. But when it dries, it feels heavier and sticky, basically like conventional filter "oil".

The first time I used the Evolution, I thought I had a defective bottle since it was so watery. I think it gets pretty dang tacky. Now, to say that it gets as tacky as Bel Ray would be a stretch, but relative to the "red" No Toil, I think it tacks up at least as good. The thing I like about it, is that since its so thin, I can work it deeper into the filter.

Moisture hasn't been a concern for me since I don't race much so I basically pick and choose when to ride (which isn't in wet conditions). I can tell you that it seems to do a great job keeping sand and red clay dust out of the intake. The red stuff served me well for the last 10 years, I'm sold on it, can't go wrong if you decide to go that way as far as I'm concerned.
