hi dave,

i to live in socal and what i did was walked into the shops and handed my resume to someone who would take it. you would be surprised at how many shops you can hit in one day in the 909. another good place is cycle news. they always have industry job posting in the cycle news paper. i started on working on orders and shipping then made my way into graphic design. lots of graphic design is needed and lost of shipping receiving jobs. work your way up bro. get to know who the key people are. talk to those key people at the races and practice. i guess you can say networking is important. i did get some help from my uncle who knew a few key individuals from his racing days but i put alot of effort to. and remember most of these companies are small and not corporate. must wear many hats in the moto industry.

What ever you do stay away from dealerships. I too attend college and work part time at a local dealership, at first its pretty fun but three years later a few changes in management I leave work now not even wanting to look at a freaking dirt bike. Seriously I work a motorcycle dealership and the only dirt bikes we even have there is one YZ450F and one KX450F, yeah one of each, and we carry Yamaha, Suzuki as well as Kawasaki yeah and only two big bikes. If wasn't for the red necks buying Rhinos and Teryx's with lifts and 30 plus inch tires on them I would not know how the place stayed in business. So word to the wise stay away from dealerships unless you want to hear sales guys lie there ass off to sell a product that isn't nothing what they say it is. I can't tell you how many times I have heard that a 2009 Hayabusa will do 200 plus miles an hour, WTF.

Ohh yeah Ballsed out you kinda sound like a sales guy. HAHAHA

This might help...

MX JOB

... at the very least you should refer back to it every now and then and take notes on who's looking and what they're looking for.

Taking a part time gig, doing just about anything sounds like a great idea. Get to a few tracks in Socal and hook up with a trackside support suspension guy. Hang out and offer a hand setting sag if it becomes busy. Who knows

What kind of "industry" job do you want? One with a team that is actually around the races, or one that Ballsout claims to have where you're not really in the industry, you just have a job at a Tshirt shop?

If you want one with a team, go to Pro Circuit and tell him you will sweep floors for free until you learn enough to have a paid position.

If you want a job like Ballsout claims to have, go to an apparl company and apply, those jobs are a dime a dozen.

In all honesty, its not for everyone and sometimes sucks ass. It isnt nearly as clamorus as one might think.

Damn man, learn to enjoy your commercial plumbing gig. get your degree and become a plumbing contractor. MX business is not so great to work in, not enough money too many unpaid hours.

yep, been a parts manger for 6 years. I go home and don't even want to think about a bike. If you love motorcyles i say stay away. from a dealership. It will definetly ruin it for you. I would leave in a heart beat, but unfotunatly i started there right out of hight school and didnt go to college, so i am kinda stuck for the time being. But i guess any job working retail sucks balls. Not just selling bike parts.

dealing with the general public and motorcycles definetly causes alot of burnout. I still love to race and if I could get a job where I would be on the road or go to races I would still take it in a second.

I think what most people don't understand is this most "industry" jobs don't pay a whole lot.

IT can destroy you.

I got started by building good relationships with the dealer I bought bikes from over the years and was in one day to get new bikes and left w/ a job offer. 4years later I'm still here selling bikes and have 3classes left to have my associates in business/marketing.

SO I'll be looking for a change in scenery SOON.

God your an ass. I don't see where the guy is pretending to be anybody. Simply wants a job around motorcycles. I did it for 20+ years and still love bikes. I'm sure you'll come back with something equally as witty. BTW, if the motorcycle industry is such a bad career, what the hell are you doing here. Maybe your afraid he'll start selling pink kool-aid?

Lots of worthwhile pessimism here. I got the mx job I always wanted and now I don't make enough money or have time to ride.
