Firstly prayers and respect to the injured, I hope it is only injuries.......They don't need wave starts though. Part of it is the danger, iv ridden the Weston Super Mare beach race in the uk many times which has the same type of mass start, 800-1200 entries and a 1 mile start straight and it's the danger that keeps me doing it, just like the riders who take on the TT on the Isle of Man, you understand and accept the danger, if it was easy everybody would be doing it, it's what sets you aside from a mortal on the street.

That wasn't even a massive tip over and it didn't occur at anything remotely close to wide open. (referring to the video)

That start straight was around 1km long, and the leaders were flat out, the rest were only not flat out because of the spray and visibility... it was huge off, no mistake... and they used to go the full length of the beach , around 3 miles to the first turn , now they do a short start and go the opposite way round... its a great event , was in pitlane last year , awesome experience to watch the start and see the fast boys come round ... and trying to work out fuel mileage was fun too. Deffo an event to add to the bucket list.

Did you see the crash when the bikes were going right to left? (at about :14 seconds into the video) That is the one I'm talking about...

Nope. Didn't see that one, actually. Blush

That's what happens when you try to sneak in some youtube at work. I'm watching the dude at 1:32 wondering how that was massive. Ha ha!

That's the type of race that you can tell your buddy afterwards "I had a great line through the first turn and picked off 236 guys"!

A similar thing happened at Weston Super Mare a few years back. One of the guys, Todd Kellett, was in a coma for a while if I remember correctly.

Crash starts at about 0:14.

It's much safer now with the shorter straight. Like Weston above, the tide was real high this year and only just gone out at the start so allot more spray than usual from the strong on shore wind.

Le touquet is awesome event and a great weekend. well worth the visit

Sadly, that's not the case. At least 3 broken femur, several others with broken bones and one rider was found unconscious and is fighting for his life at the moment. Keep him in your thought. Riders passing by said they saw blood everywhere in the sand, like a crime scene. It was terrible.
Every year shit happens on the start. A woman spectating has been killed few years ago because she was too close of the action... My advice : keep away from this race.

Yeah it's bad shit,, I've seen some stuff go down at WSM in the past, the thing is the racers, organisers and fans can have lots of fast excitement by changing the start at le touqet as they have in WSM

You can still have flat out fast sections but safely when the field has spread a little

French are crazy enough not to change it though , I kinda like that but it would be great to see these things go down without near death

that's sad news, I must admit we were stood watching down the beach from the promenade and the only thing separating quads / bikes and spectators is a single strip of tape! There are people leaning out over it and you have a mixture of very fast pros skimming whoops wide open and novices struggling to go in a straight line! I usually stand back in the dunes and watch from a safe distance!

I think they need to look at making it safer, but there is only so much you can do
