Thought some of you might enjoy watching this video, how a billet Ti footpeg is machined from scratch. As a 3D Product Designer myself (some HSM knowledge and 1st hand experience running some Haas machines), what they do there at Titan is very impressive! He, Titan Gilroy, pushes his machines and his tooling to points that veteran machinists would never even consider doing...it's impressive to say the least!

I am a hobby machinist compared to a lot of you guys I'm sure. Haas vf3, harding, bridgeport etc. I've done a few pieces in Ti. Machining Ti can be a bitch!
That's a really bad ass piece of machine work.

I was in the factory Honda semi at the Monster Cup last month. They have a drawer full of one piece CNC machined Ti footpegs with different cuts/angles for different rider or track preference. Wife took a picture of one of the pegs in my hand. They told me approx $2500 a set to make. I handed the footpeg right back. Pretty sweet though!!!

I randomly caught that video one day, very cool. Boy I wish I could use my work machines for personal stuff, we have like every machine known to man from old ass bridgeports to the newest machining centers.

Titan does amazing things with Ti. Really made a name for himself specializing in it. I cant stand running it. Only thing i cant stand more than Ti is Haas machines.

Funny

That machine brand has made PLENTY of parts and tooling for this industry.

You one of them Mazak types?

Lol, yeah. Mazak and hurco. Maybe its just our area and our install techs, but haas machines are few and far between because of their horrible reliability issues and horrible customer service. Like i said, maybe its just the region im in that has that issue.

Haas are ok, decent for the money but they dont like working hard for long.. We had a few for doing the lighter stuff, but for the proper hard work we had Starrag-Heckert and DMG . More money , but worth the extra dollar,

Reclamation is big business, and companies that are proper go to great lengths to ensure that cross contamination of swarf never happens. machines that machine Ti will only do Ti etc.. Ti is expensive to produce ,and expensive to machine, as it kills tools.

That billet will be around $100 I reckon, although im out of the loop a bit now with material , I know we used to do stuff in MMC , which was £1000 a billet , a bit bigger than that, and used £1500 of tolls per part to make suspension rocker arms.

That's 2-stroke price, if you tell them you have a 4-stroke it's $999 for the same set.

Flare ups are nasty, Magnesium is bad , but Zirconium alloy chips and dust will go up on their own for fun, they have to be stored in barrels full of water .

I heard a story about a new guy in a shop using a shop-vac to clean up zirconium chips. He was fired as soon as the fire department left the scene.

About the pegs; It seems they just made them for the smaller 50/65cc bikes?

I checked to buy some, but no current 250/450cc models are made.

Seemed like lots of money and effort, also very trick for a 65cc racer?

When are they going to sell these to me for a KX250F, and how much will they cost?

you dont get a second go , thats for sure.. nasty stuff. we had to pass a spectrocope test on the suds to show zero contamination before they would take the chips away.

I'm 99% sure that the KTM 50/65 pegs are the very same peg that fits the big bikes.
