I have a small motorcycle shop where I pretty much do everything including minor service work. I also have an indoor MX series I run and sometimes build the tracks. All in all I'm setting on my ass quite a bit, no excuses.

I think the kidney belt will help, no real pain today but I can feel some pressure in the area while sitting. Just the extra pressure on the area from tightening my belt really helps things feel in place.

Your back is like any vintage mechanical device, it needs a lot of care, and spare parts are hard to come by, so the utmost is needed, like the post above, you have to find your own methods that work for you. me stretching before i get out of bed and in the shower, swimming/cycling.

Physical therapy has helped me out quite a bit. My therapist showed me all kinds of stretches and exercises. Now I do stretches every night before bed, and every morning when I wake up. I also have an inversion table that I try and hang in for a few minutes at night. Between all of this, and exercises to keep my core strong, I am much better and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be riding any more if it wasn't for all this stuff.

It's good to read everyone's experiences.

A year ago at 42, my back problems started. I've done it all too- chiropractor (the no drug route) and doctor (drugs- muscle relaxers and prescription for the pain).

Both had there moments of success as well as ineffectiveness.

The common theme that came from both is what has been echoed here over and over "strengthen your core".

Unfortunately, just like those of us that pack a few extra pounds, have full time jobs, kids, and chores- we often don't find the time to maintain a regular exercise or strengthening routine. In other words, I have a lame excuse for why mine still hurts all the time!!

I have heard good things about Yoga and personally want to give it a chance. I'm not young, but I also don't want to feel like this for the rest of my life either.

Even doing a few planks a day on your down time will help strengthen your lower back and core!

I've used and go to chiropractor for "tune-ups" as needed and I'm a believer in them.

*give Acupuncture a try, research them and find a dr. in your area, take the time to watch the movie "9,000 needles" if your not a believer in acupuncture. there are other documents on the subject but this is just one I watched recently.

I do yoga and pilates regular along with cycling, gym work outs, and of course moto

Sounds like an issue that started 8 years ago for me. Does it feel like somebody should just pull your leg and give it a pop and everything will be good? That's what I get and I've been told it's an SI joint issue.

Chiro is actually very effective for me when it flares up. Agree with everything said in here about core strength, yoga etc to keep it from happening again. Before you get out of bed in the morning, lie on your back, bring your knees up and roll them to each side, resting there for a good 10-15 secs for a good stretch. Just that works wonders for me.

Well , if you get back pain especially right side(which is known for common pain place for kidney infection) during physical activities that include back muscles it is most probably muscle strain , but it can be caused from very serious conditions, check for some on right side lower back pain , it is about pain in lower right back pains,
but best thing you could do that I recommend is to visit chiropractor which can five you proper diagnosis.
I don't recommend ignoring pain or doing self-healing of some type!

Sitting is the new smoking in regards to how bad it is for you.

Likely your "problem" isn't your back but more likely you ROM/mobility and your hip flexors.

Start here.

For the last few years it seemed like I would hurt my back about once a year, however I would always just take it easy for a week or so, do some light stretching etc. and it would always get better, no big deal I figure.

About 3 weeks ago I was bending taking off a front wheel. When I pushed down on the wrench to break the axle bolt loose something went. I'm not sure what really happened but I seriously just layed down on the floor for about 30 minutes. The pain is always in my lower back on the right side and kind of goes all the way around to the hip / groin area. The next day I felt about 50% better, the day after that I was probably 90% better, the next day I get carried away and help my dad load a riding lawn mower and it went again.

I kind of keep repeating this cycle, I took about a week off and did pretty much nothing and felt normal. I raced a muddy hare scrambles event that Sunday and had to pick up the bike a few times, The pain was back but nothing like the initial injury. By Tuesday I felt fine but raced pitbikes last night and here I am again with a heating pad.

Anyone tried a Chiropractor? Some of the stuff I read sounds more like witch craft than real medical science.
I've had very similar problems -- sent you a PM explaining what is working for me! Best of luck!

Thanks for all of the guys posting in this thread with ideas - especially specific exercises and stretches. I have the same problem and have no desire to visit a doctor (love the new deductible based insurance plans!!). I am 40 and 5'8" 170 lbs. I have been on and off fitness routines for the past year which seem to be helping, but I am certainly not 'cured'. I will definitely try all of the ideas here!

Thanks OP and contributors!

The best advice I can give for back problems is don't bend over and pick up heavy things off the ground. If there is a common theme among all back injuries it is that someone bent over and tried to pick something up that they probably shouldn't have. Leave it for someone else to do. Walk right past it and ignore just like it was a steaming heap of dog doo. Some other fool will not be as wise as you and let him suffer the consequences.

First of all, I am a chiropractor. With that being said, finding a two chiropractors that do the same thing is a challenge. The one area of our profession that sucks is there are too many different avenues of thought. Some chiros believe in no medicine only chiropractic care and some...well I really don't know what they believe but they try to call it chiropractic. I treat everyone different in my office because not everyone responds the same and not every type of adjustment works on each person.

Chiropractic is about realigning the spine to allow the nerves to flow normally. Very simple concept and it makes sense if you understand how the body works.

The pain you are describing is nerve pain most likely in the L3 area. Your right hip could be misaligned also causing your body to compensate. Unfortunately you like most people wait until its really bad to come see us.

Find a good chiropractor, take up yoga or stretching. Google can be your friend. Good luck.

I couldnt agree with Uptite more. Have had personal experience similar to yours and would just shrug it off and stretch more after exercise. I thought I had quiet a good stretch.
On holidays in Asia i did 2 months of Ashtanga yoga for 2 hrs per day. The benefits for offroad riders is huge, it balanced out my muscles from opposing each other, and increased my stretch ability in areas i had never known how to stretch in my life .
Before the yoga I had trouble with my core strength, not that is was weak, it was actually the opposite my core was strong but out of balance. I found it difficult to do abb work as my muscle would contract and compress my lower back. That has all changed.

Chiropractors will not resolve the problem IMO.

If you try yoga make sure it is a flow style like Ashtanga, I have tried other style since being back in Australia and to me its a load of bollocks the spiritual long meditation styles most women in Australia choose, us guys need a dynamic workout style we dont need a spiritual enlightening

There's some serious gold in here...

I hit the ground HARD today at the Glen. My daily stretching came into play in my ability to get up, shake it off, acknowledge the soreness...& get back on the bike. Sore, bruised; but, thanks to daily stretching...I got to keep going and "work it out".

I'm stoked to see a thread like this.

I am no doctor BUT I have recently had a lumbar microdistecomy ( they cut the disc of where is hanging out and pushing on the sciatic nerve) it was 15mm out. about 1/2 inch.

What it sounds like is sciatica. The sciatic nerve runs along the bottom of your spine down your bum and to your foot.

Pain usually starts in the lower back, down your bum through the hamstring and into the calf and foot.

It started like this for me. Then the disc herniated ( happened twice) then I lost control of my foot ( foot drop) saw surgeon after 3 mths waiting he operated 3 days later. 2 months later I'm back in the gym, running, swimming and riding. Slowly regaining control of my foot again. So all going well.

google "sciatica" and I think you'll be fine.

Chiro is a bad idea...if you have an injury they will make it worse. See a specialist and find what the issue prior to doing anything else...I

i've had lower back problems for the last year and the specialist i saw said about 'core' strength, as a lot of other people have said in this thread.....plank side plank those kind of excerises were prescribed but the actual manipulation etc. didn't really do a lot for me so I would advise it unless you like a lot of pain Smile for not much gain

i started out resting and avoiding doing things but no progress was made, i found just thinking a bit more about tasks and impact rather than just lifting bending twisting etc. helped and maintaining a steady work out to impove the core
I also used one of the training games on the xbox360 with the kinect which has some good core excerises and even things like yoga etc on it
+getting old sucks!

Seems like when I stretch I end up more sore. It's like my back gets stiff and tight. I can't seem to shake my daily ache, but then again I just started an exercise program.

I have similar prob that just pops or clicks every few years as a result of one of 3 back injuries I've received including compression fracture of the lower spine, a back strain from lifting an XR600 that felt like a tear in the lower back when it happened and being bent over the seat belt in a head on car accident, that can be set off by twisting, lifting or even sneezing once. 100 treatments of chiro robbery didn't fix it but an old muscle therapy guy did in one visit and would get me in the muscles behind the knees that run up the back of the leg to the lower pelvis believe it or not and pull it down when in spasm, plus some other work in the tune up. He was taught the old fashioned way on beef carcases and how the muscles run and work he told me. He retired but and then I was stuffed for a few years and went through 5 pretenders till I found my current guy who can fix me in one visit every time. HIP FLEXORS is what he told me that goes out. Had to see him on Monday actually when I woke up sore and got worse during the morning and I was back lifting heavy loads later that day on night shift in my new job that I thought I would be wrecked for. I've also had got results with the Ashtanga yoga which is way harder than people think and a good work out to hold those poses. That has worked for me and my case anyway. I also wear a kidney belt when I ride which I believe helps too.

Everyone is different but here is what got me off the floor.

Hip Flexor stretches.

Funny but it was this stretch that cured all my back problems over everything else. I tried inversion and every other stretching the book but a friend that is a crazy mma/crossfit psychopath introduces me to these.

Or if you have someone that can help this is the BOMB!

You have to find the right chiropractor. The guy I have been using this year is amazing. The sessions are close to an hour and 90% of that is stretching. Several times I have been and he doesn't even adjust me. Chiropractors in my past have put me on the table cracked my hips, back, then neck and sent me packing.

I am sure if you sift through there are good Chiro's that can help, is your guy also a physiotherapist by chance?
I am not saying Racerx930 should not consult a professional.
But at the end of the day, if we are going to keep beating our selves up on dirtbikes you are going to be need to build and sustain a balanced core strength with free movement. I believe the right style of yoga is the simplest and cheapest way of achieving this and can be done anywhere at anytime.

Upper back and neck pain is a little different to lower back pain, especially when its chronic.
