I can't look at the pin on starts I swear I'm sooooo late if I do. I'm a top of the bar person.

Oh and be a real friend and pat me on the back and yell good luck as the board goes sideways too !!!

Ever have a little frog hop down by the pin and totally screw your start up? Thanks roost swallowing Kermit.

Good my gas IS on for the 19th time.

..... wait ...... yep still on.

Always looked at the pin. To tell you the truth, I've never even looked at the bar so I don't know if
that would work better for me or not!!

this.

the difference is negligible. pick whichever you like and worry about the other 99.9999% of your starting technique.

its about Focus... the pin is next to the ground, you look at one you see both, no issues, but the bar is above the ground so you have to focus on that and stop your eyes wandering , but then the movement isnt as easy to see, because its against a blurred background

Then there is the physics.. pin is pulled, so watch what pulls the pin, it moves at the speed of the stamp of the gate guy, the bar drops , at the 9.81m/s/SQ.. but is doing that through an arc , so the more vertical the gate , the slower it will start to fall.

Work on reaction time exercises. There's apps that are fun will help out. Train your mind to react quicker.

Don't look at either, look about 10' beyond the gate. It helps you get over the gate straighter as you tend to go where you are looking. Just as important, peripheral vision is better at detecting motion than central vision.

I used to watch the gate, then I started watching the pin on my gate and was better, now I watch the pin on the gate next to me and it's much better. It's about angles. The angle you look at the pin makes it easier to see it move than if you were looking at the gate in front of you. Giving you a faster reaction time. I do think there is an element of personal preference to it, but I would always advise someone to watch the pin next to them

At the amateur level, it doesn't matter. Find what works for you.

It's so much more important to get the clutch right and come out straight. Hold it on longer than everyone else to the first turn!

Like everything in life it's personal preference plus with older riders there is the habit factor.

I am a bar man.

I never looked at the pin or gate... I always felt if I focused on one thing or the other too much, it slowed my reaction time. Just looked down and kept any and all gate mechanisms in my sight. When something moved, I did too.

I was a very good starter - my best streak was 16 holeshots in a row.

Yep and, use a 20 foot double 10 feet out of the gate analogy to help get you moving quickly with perfect clutch work.

Nobody times the gate? When the 30 second board holder hits the last rut? 1 one thousand after? 2 secs after entering doghouse?

2 moto's before yours, count the drop, you line up and 1000, 2000, 3000 you go regardless. 9 out of 10 you nail it. That one time, you make up for it.

I usually stage as far back as possible and close my eyes

Look at the gate to the left and look at the pin on it... works every time.

At Carlsbad there was a phone pole behind the pad so you could only back up so far.
You could have your rear tire just on the downside of the log while holding the front brake.
Man, that worked well. As long as Frank didn't see you. Smile
