I undestand what's being done. But, for the kid who is 12, weighs 190+, is 6', has been riding big bikes for a while now, it just doesnt 'fit' him. But, I understand what they are trying to do. It really comes down to size mostly, then experience too. Some kids at 16 are still not ready for a big bike, size wise.

When was the last time you saw a 6' 190 lb 12 year old? Shit, when was the last time you saw a fully grown top level mxer weigh more than 175?

Good grief...if someone is 12 and 6 foot and 190...dirt bikes aren't for him, he has much more money to be made on the football field or basketball court.

What if he just wants to race? He can't?

My friend's son is 12, 6'0" and weighs 205. Yeah, he plays football, but he likes to ride too.

This is going to sound harsh, but oh well. The kid can loose some weight! You change the rules for the masses not the exceptions.

Travis Pastrana

Ronny Lechien

Travis Preston

All 125cc champs and bigger than you described.

Now they just need to go a step further and make amateur racing all two strokes and the entry pro class as well, then make the premier class 250cc four strokes... then we can watch the best racing, not to mention the most industry-wide financially sensible and easily marketed model.

This ^^^ Smile Motocross could use some more affordable racing, and this new rule *should* help with that.

Color me dumb, but I didn't even know 12 year olds were riding 250s. That's just ridiculously young to be on a bike that powerful.

A step in the right direction...at last...hoping for more to follow.
I agree with the "for the masses, not exceptions" comment.

15 years later the AMA decides to pay attention to what Mitch Payton said in MXA in 2001. Fuggin genius! But is this the AMA or The AMA?Laughing

Yeah it's more frequent then you'd ever imagine.

I don't like what they did to the stock class, but I'm definitely down with this.

He is the exception and not the normal mx sized kid. The ama is looking out for the safety of the riders. The injuries and deaths are way up with kids moving from 85s to 250fs. Looks like the rumor I heard from kawi insider about the new kx 125 is true.

I know a former Australian 80cc #2 who was 6'3 and 200lb at 12, he had to take a year off because he was too young for 125's and when he cane back he wasn't the same. He was an exception though, and he's pretty much the same size now, at 33yo.

I think this is definitely a good move, 12 is far too young to be riding a 250, and when you can't turn pro till you're 18 anyway, is there any need to move onto a 250 at such a young age? Also I've never really understood amateurs of 14 or 15 riding 450's anyway

This isn't going to change them riding and practicing on them, it will only change them racing them.
