These older Toyotas are AWESOME! The 22RE is pretty much bullet proof. With only 106hp, they should be! One thing to watch out for though is when the timing chain starts to get some slack in it, it has the potential to wear groves in the timing cover. It leads to coolant mixing with the engine oil and it could get pretty expensive if not caught. New chain and cover every 150k should do the trick. Not uncommon to see these engines with 400-500k miles on them. The frames and bodies rust out before the engine stops, especially in my area.
I did a solid axle swap, 5.29's with Aussie lockers front and rear, and dual transfer cases (currently sitting on my garage floor waiting to be installed). I need to get some odds and ends before she'll be trail ready like reroute the ebrake cables and install a transfer case e-brake, need custom drive shafts built and then swap the 33x12.50's for some 35x12.50's. I'm thinking about getting the entire exterior LineX'd or a DIY alternative in an army green. I know it's not pretty now, but function > form. Since it's just a trail rig, and will probably be rolled at some point, I'm not too concerned how she looks.
