Had a pretty fast guy approach me ask me to use my 450 in a big race in ohio soon. Big cash purse. Said he would pay for bike fuel, wear parts, etc. Anybody have any good or bad stories letting someone use their bike? I saw a friendship end over it once. Dude wadded it cause bout $900 damage, took the owner 6 months to get the $900. I am 50/50 on the idea,as doing a nice favor, but my other buddy thinks I am crazy, considering I am anal and off about my bikes.

I loaned my practice bike to Eddie Warren when he came to Sacramento to race an Australian promoted Arenacross. When he left he took his bars and suspension but left me his works cylinder and coned pipe. Worked out for me, but he had the means to fix anything if something went real bad.

Isn't lending your bike to a pro rider much like letting a pornstar have sex with your girl?

Is it a friend or random guy? What do you have to gain from the situation?

I never have other than a few practice laps. I would get the "rent" up front as well as a damage deposit. If he returns the bike in once piece, return the deposit minus the cost of wear parts.

My gut feelings on doing this are usually pretty right. I loaned a YZ250T to a friend and he blew it up. Had it back and fixed immediately. We laughed about it. Same guy was thinking of buying a 65 from me for his son. At practice, his son rode it and wadded bad. Nothing too major, needed radiator, bars, etc. Got the bike back to the pits and he said, well, I guess we just bought a bike! Point being, I felt confident that if anything would happen, he would make it right and he did.

Why does he not have his own bike?

Put a custom map on it with a 1500rpm lower rev limiter.

I would never. People don't ask to ride my bike, but I'd probably almost always say no anyway. I really don't have a desire to ride others bikes either. I've wadded up my bikes a couple times costing thousands to fix. I don't want to do that to someones bike or have it done to mine either.

Unless you have a lawyer and a contract involved, they're probably not liable for any damages.

Holigan gets it. Letting some you know and trust take her out for a moto or two is way cool....lending it to a pro to actually race on , two full motos , that you don't really know?? No way would I do it.

Billy is he asking to borrow the Honda? Or the Suzuki?

I'd pass on it because you never know what could happen under any condition..whether it be practice or race, wads up or gets punted off the track and the bike gets totaled, just not worth it.

Depends on who it is. I only lend a bike to someone who I KNOW can ride and takes care of his own stuff, and also have the complete trust that if anything happens to the bike they will fix it better than we then got it. Only a couple of times have I found that in a person! Last guy had offered to put our YZ250 back together after a stall during rear linkage bearing replacement. While working on it his YZ450 blew. Bike came back looking brand new and every bolt greased!

No I wouldn't. I let a "friend" ride my brand new barely broken in 04 crf250, I think I had like the first or second one in NC. Well anyways he wadded it up into a tree and did all kinds of damage. Ruined my new graphics. Exhaust, radiator, bars etc.

My bike stayed at his house for several weeks while he said he was fixing it. Finally I got pissed off and just went and picked it up. The only thing he replaced on it was the exhaust end cap. And the rivets ended up falling out of it first ride.

I would do it only if I KNEW that if something went wrong he would take care of the expense fully.

Exactly. I have a few buddies I grew up racing with who I wouldn't hesitate if they asked BUT if anyone else asked I wouldn't even consider it.

Well Billy....you lend it out for something like that and it opens the door for more people to ask.....and maybe the same guy again? I don't know....use your best judgement. Anyone on planet earth that is into this sport would love to go burn some motos on that CRF of yours....cause it's one badass bike!

I "borrow" a bike from my brother to ride all the time (he has 2 re-styled yz250's). I pay to maintain it and will wash it and do the work. I also buy some parts for it and he gets to keep those (bars, pegs, ect.)

I also borrowed a fully race ready pro machine from him for a season. I started the season by paying for a brand new transmission, some internal bearings, 3 clutches, crank, piston, cylinder, and head at the beginning of the season as all of that (minus the head itself) is replaced after the season. I also bought everything else that will wear out but I could keep at the end of the season, like rims/tires. Blew it up at the end of the season (typically we replace everything after 10 hours, this one had 10.2 and was the first one we blew up, further reinforcing the fact that stock rods last about 10 hours), and we squared up but were essentially even.

(yes I know it's an atv..I won 35 of 36 races that year though, beating my brother even)

My brother has his pro license for AMA flattrack. I traveled the country with him for 3 summers and we would always borrow parts (we brought enough to have 2+ spares of just about everything) but would never let someone borrow our spare machine.

Anyone that helps out while working/building our bikes/atv's can usually borrow one if the situation dictates (they blew theirs up during a moto or were having problems during practice). Otherwise no. The situation almost always being that if you break it you buy it and make sure to chip in some for use depending on how much it was used...but we are a little more flexible. If it were to blow up through no fault of your own, we wouldn't make you rebuild it because it would have blown up for sure if we were riding it.

My brother also borrowed my 450 quite a bit a few years ago. He crashed on two separate occasions and broke the subframe among other things. He paid and fixed everything. I know these aren't great examples but it can work out if you know the guy well enough and I would borrow it to someone I know would be able to pay and is offering to pay for parts/use.

A couple of times I came back to racing just for a weekend (I go to school so don't race every season) and borrowed my brothers ATV, I simply gave him my winnings for the day (2 $500 races, 1 $376, 1 $340, and various other ~$100ish).

If someone cant afford to buy a bike then they sure as hell cant afford to race it or fix it when they break it.

If it was a close friend, I would. I will always let anyone ride my bike or spin a couple laps if they ask. I would be more hesitant to let someone race my bike unless it was a good friend.

If you don't know the guy very well he's out of line even asking you. Just say no!
