For nerd...

Shoot, the whole track is orange . . .

10/10/2012 2:48 PM

Ha ha it is kinda. Sorry if I misled anyone with the thread title. Now that I look at it it kinda sounds like Jody started a race team.

10/10/2012 2:56 PM

Looks like a pic from REM where he races every week...

10/10/2012 3:23 PM

Why is he not on the far superior two stroke?

10/10/2012 3:50 PM

I hope I'm still having that much fun at his age. Bravo.

10/10/2012 6:02 PM

Does anyone have any video of him riding/racing? Seriously, after 40+ years of him telling everyone what's good/bad about a bike, I'd like to see the guy's skills!

I'd like to see that too, but it's not just him telling everyone about the bikes . MXA has had many fast test riders over the years, McGrath, and Larry Brooks among them. I'm sure you knew that. There was a pretty cool article in MXA awhile back about their test riders through the years.

10/10/2012 6:20 PM

Jody on a KTM - SHOCKER!

10/10/2012 6:40 PM

I thought they were a Yamaha shop? No, a Honda shop?

Is it fast? Does it turn? How does it handle? The bottom line?

Their test drive me crazy with that stupid question / answer format.

But Jody does pen a good article ever now and then.

Classic MXA question/ answer: Is it fast? In a word no. hmmm.......and thats what I got all hyped up about when I looked at the cover and saw it was a shootout issue.

In my opinion, Jimmy Lewis and Dirt Rider have the best shootouts. Jody is very smart when it comes to technology, but he also has never learned that there are a few of us around who have been in a couple races and understand how things like fuel injection work.

He is very slow, I'd say about 90% of the orange helmets I saw riding at last years world vet nats where slow. So slow in fact that I wondered how the hell can you test a bike at that pace.

uhhh, no you dont.

...great writer and story teller and tons of knowledge about all things Moto but the talent stops when he throws a leg over...and he will be the first to admit it. What I appreciate tons is his love for racing- period. He is always out there and always doing his best. Better than most that sit on the couch and never race. He has found his happiness and thats what we all want when the dust settles.

I was never one for their censored ads, but I love Jody's editorials... he's a legend (and is moto through and through).

I agree, Dirt Rider is the top mag. I think JL knows a lot and seems like a great guy. Jody has earned his stripes as well. I buy the occasional MXA, but they are still a fun mag to make fun of, Motocross Fiction, Pro Circuit Action, etc.

MXA has/had several fast test riders who's opinions on bikes should be respected. Jody? Not so much... He may get around REM "OK" but on the National track? You would have to see it to believe it. I don't see/hear Jody bragging about his speed, but apparently plenty of his faithful readers seem to. I doubt they've seen him "race"...

Excuse me while I whip this out......

Jody is core... and every weekend he's there with a lot of other racers at REM having a blast, racing and hanging with friends. Last weekend Jody rode the 2013 KTM 450F (pictured-sorry ATK, used the pic for an example ) in the 2nd moto. In the 1st moto he was on the 2013 Honda 450F testing pipes. Dennis Stapleton also raced the same Honda too. After the races Jon Ortner and Dave Eropkin (all ex-pro's from the 70's/80's and are very fast Vet Expert riders now) tried the Honda also on the same track as they were testing different pipe settings. I believe all MXA bikes get raced at all levels... Pro's, Int's, Vets, etc... something to be said about that IMO.

Is Jody fast?.... maybe back in the day in the 70's, but he has never claimed to be. But he is out there every weekend enjoying what he loves to do, which is racing mx. And I hope to be doing the same thing when I'm 60 years old.

how you dicks can bag on jody is fucking hilarious.

give me a break...

Definitely. I posted this in reference to an argument involving nerd and a few others over whether what Jody did was actually racing or not. It was in that marathon MXA GP bashing thread from a few weeks ago. I've been reading MXA for years and I still like the magazine.

10/10/2012 8:18 PM

All the guys who will be 20-30 years from setting a foot on a bike at his age are talking trash about his speed.....LOL.

10/10/2012 8:26 PM

Jody ripped it around here when he was 'your age'. And not just moto. Road racing, flat track, w/e. We both were sponsored by the same shop (Big R Cycle in Richardson). I was a little punk and he was the star of the shop. If it had a motor and two wheels he'd race it. He had the sweetest Hodaka (yeah, a Hodaka) road racer I ever saw. We used to drool on it.

For his age, he is certainly still quick. And one of the very few full time dirt bikers with an advanced degree. Most of ya couldn't carry his jock strap.

10/10/2012 9:13 PM

The guy has earned respect, no matter what anyone thinks of his magazine or opinions.

Who the hell cares "how fast he is", anyone who knows moto knows he loves the sport and has lived his life around the sport like most of us would have dreamed.

Good on him for still riding and living the dream, and i mean no disrespect to him at all

But.............

Fast for his age doesnt mean shit to me if he's testing a bike im looking at buying. I want someone who is my speed, or my weight, or my height. The majority of riders arent 60 yrs old and most of us dont ride at a 60 yr old pace.

He may know a thing or to and has been around forever but i'll take his actual seat of the pants riding experience with a grain of salt.

10/10/2012 9:31 PM

Whether you like their opinions or not, you have to hand it to MXA for having real opinions. Most of the other magazines prefer to simply tell you how great everything is.
Not sure the last time I saw an honest review in Transworld...

Bingo. I like Jody and I like MXA, but I just can't read it any more because of the whole question and answer format that permeates the entire rag.

Chuck Norris is 1/8th Scottish. This has nothing to do with ancestry, the man ate a fucking Scotsman!

they used to over use the word "anemic" it was so annoying. i dont see it much anymore.
when a yamaha would win their shootout, they would say, "buy it race it love it." when a suzuki or honda would win, they said it was because they were "the least flawed" . their sarcastic style of writing is ridiculous at times. i wonder if it is the same person (Jody) writing all the articles? it seems like it.

10/11/2012 3:39 AM

1. Testing bikes is all about experience. How can you say that bike X is better or worse than bike Y unless you've ridden both?

2. Speed of the test rider is less important than experience in my opinion. A flawed bike reveals it's flaws to any level of rider. Equally a good bike is a good bike, irrespective of the speed of the rider.

When I did test riding, which I did for many years, the good test riders (even if they were slower) drew the exact same conclusions about the bike as I did. However if we ever brought in a guest pro they often wouldn't have a clue because they only had one brand (their race bike) to compare against. More often than not they would also invent some issue with the performance - one that was at odds with every other test rider's opinions - in order to make it seem like they knew what they were doing.

Hence I consider the opinions of a vastly experienced slower rider far more credible than those of a less experienced fast guy.

Incidentally, in my experience you can tell whether a bike is good or bad within a couple of straights. Bad bikes don't get better the more you ride them, and vice versa.

3. It's not just Jody that tests the bikes. MXA have plenty of faster test riders too, just in case, by some miracle, a bad bike turns into a good one for a faster rider.

4. JW has forgotten more about motocross than most people on this board will ever know.

5. He's ridden - no, probably raced - practically every bike that's ever been built. No other person on the planet has that experience.

6. He's still racing in his mid-60s. To bag on him is ridiculous.
