Is this an OEM Alum CR500 or a custom 500AF?

I saw this ad on craigs in New Mexico. At first I was like OMG REBUILT OEM ALUMINUM CR500 for $3500! Then I was like wait a minute, price is too low, no year is mentioned, and the muffler is a 1989-01 model. I am guessing this is an custom AF. Am I right? or should we all haul @zz to see who gets to NM with cash in hand first? Smile

Since Honda never made an aluminum frame CR500 I'm gonna vote for custom.

Limited edition factory piece. So limited, in fact, only THAT owner, you, and a few others on Vital have seen it. Oh ya, everyone on Craigslist.
Checked out the pics, can't quite figure out if it's the light or the angle of the shot, but looks like a hatchet job on those frame rails. Not quite a Fanelli hatchet job, but still........

Thanks for filling me in on the CR500af history. I have always been under the impression that for a few years in the end Honda made the CR500 with an aluminum frame. I never looked into it all that much. I looked the CR500 history up closer just now and stand corrected. As you guys noted it was Service Honda and other custom builders that built all the aluminum framed CR500s. https://www.servicehonda.com/afhist.html

That right there is a custom build with a first gen Honda aluminum frame. It escapes me why anyone would mount a CR500 engine in the worst Aluminum frame ever created.

It's not a first gen (97-99) but a second (00-01) which actually was quite better.
As far as I know, the very first AF 500 CR was Mickey Kessler's 97...
And to my knowledge, Everts's 500 (used once in Namur '98, if I remember well) was full of factory parts from his 250 but built inhouse by his team and not by the factory, just like Paul Malin's.
