Maybe most dangerous sport on the planet? Talking about decent pro riders. Say fastest 200 riders in the world.

Yes I understand the top guys are the most fit capable talented etc. etc. but end of the day 1 tiny mistake rider or mechanical and a half a second later you could be dead or be paralyzed..

Racing the Isle of Man is more dangerous than motocross. Anything with 2 wheels is high on the list though.

Meant to mention Isle of Man but forgot. I agree that's definitely the number one event.

I guess it's important to define what is considered a sport. BASE jumping? Ascending mt Everest? Deep water solo diving? Just a few that come to mind where any mistake can kill you.

MX/SX isnt even close to being the most dangerous motorsport in the world. Drag racing,F1,flat track,Road racing,Airplane racing,Desert racing, etc etc.SX may look worse because of the amount of crashes but they are all relatively low speed. Hit a wall at 300 mph in a funny car makes SX look like childs play.

Well now that we have some proper parameters, it's obviously bowling. Definitely bowling.

This right here has to be towards the top of the list. You don't get many 2nd chances. This and freestyle / 3D type flying has claimed quite a few lives since it's inception. I have been a huge fan of the RedBull air races....very exciting to watch.

For frequent and serious injuries, motocross has to be at the top of the list. Thankfully, deaths at the professional level of MX/SX are very rare when compared to auto racing or even horse jockeys. Been following the sport for several decades and can only recall these fatalities at U.S. pro events:

Jim West (1975 Saddleback Trans AMA)
Jason Ciarletta (2004 San Diego SX)
Josh Lichtle (2011 Red Bud National)

Jason was the first and only death in the 40 year history of SX. Josh succumbed to heat stroke, not crash related trauma. Sure seemed to be a rash of fatalities at the top amateur level the last few years though. Combo of more powerful bikes and technical tracks maybe???

but how many times do you see a funny car/F1/nascar guy get carted off? most of the time all the safety systems save them from even minor injuries, lewis hamilton lost his brakes at 300K straight into a wall, didnt even have a scratch.

There are so many safety systems that have made auto racing so safe that you see some epic crashes with little or no harm done to the driver.

even moto GP guys have huge run-off areas incase of a crash, yeah the speeds are higher but i guarantee if you ask Rossi what is more dangerous he'll say MX (I think he already has)

As a MOTORSPORT yes Moto is in the top 3 along with Isle of mann TT and desert racing

I'd suggest drag boat racing is the most dangerous motorsport in the world. Most participating drivers think it is.

for deaths, Offshore Yachting, and Horse sports have higher rates of deaths than any motorsport, Eventing and Horse racing can often have severals deaths in a year,

for injuries tho, I am not sure anything beats motorcycle racing,

To make an apples to apples comparison we need to have an common denominator. A few years ago Dr. Reiman and Dr. Augustine put together a presentation based on data collected through the Asterisk Medical Mobile Medical Center addressing this exact question. The presentation was given at a medical conference to bring to light that motocross is no more dangerous if not less dangerous than other sports of the same level. They compared NFL and MX/SX. They looked at exposure rates during competition, which is the time that an athlete is actively playing or riding, and then looked at injuries that occurred during that exposure time. In football exposure time varied by position, quarterback having the most exposure time vs a punter, with average exposure per athlete being about approx. 10-15 mins per game. Compare that to SX where you have practice, qualifiers and mains and you will see the top guys having an exposure rate of approx. 1 hour. Here is where is gets interesting, when they looked at the amount of injuries football had vs. SX, football had more injuries. You could then argue that football is more dangerous but that is not what the doctors where going for. The idea behind the presentation was to try and bring awareness to doctors that racing dirt bikes is a relatively safe sport.

Dangerous? Yes. Most dangerous? I don't think so.

Rally (equally dangerous for competitors and spectators), Baja (same as rally), drag boats, etc.

Did Rossi say MX was more dangerous before or after he ran over poor Marco's neck?
