Looking for a 450. Been off the bike 2 years. Last one was an 08 CR450. Loved it. Was also very fond of my 03 YZ450 from back then. Been reading that 06-08 YZ450's are very good bikes. Vet rider. Ocotillo. I jump 95% of the jumps at most of the vet tracks. 200lbs geared. Used to be a slow local intermediate. Almost 50 just getting slower. Miss riding though.

Bought my 14 RMZ 450 for 4200$ with two sets of wheels and an FMF pipe. There are some crazy deals out there.

Wouldn't buy a 450, unless you are at the pro level you don't need one. Especially if you have been off a couple years.

Suzuki, they can be had for super cheap used for a late model, or NEW for ~5600 from your local dealer if you time it right. There is no better deal than that.

Or other option: 250 or 125 2 stroke, buy one for 1500, rebuild motor, do bearings, service suspension and buy new tires and sprockets for under 3500

I would get the 06 RC 250 in the race shop, if $4k is enough.

Unless there is something specific about one particular brand that you like or don't like, they are all going to be decent.

Finding one in good shape for a decent price is the best move you can make.

I'm 35 and racing an old 2002 YZ250 this year and doing reasonably well on it. Last year I raced a '11 YZ125 and that worked too. At 200 lbs with gear (so maybe 180 without?), a 450F or a 250 smoker is an easy bike for you to ride. I have a buddy at the track who races a '14 YZ250F in the 30+ and 40+ class. He hauls the mail on that thing, but it's going to take a little more frequent rebuilding vs the 450F. The 250 smoker and 350F are just about perfect middle ground depending on your preference. I wish more companies made a 350F.

Don't want a 2 stroke.

Don't want a 250F. Just too slow. I also had the 08 CRF250 and loved everything about it cept the power. I was always twisting the grip off that thing and still wanted more. Great bike though, never got arm pump no matter how outta shape I was, and let's you treat it like you don't have to wake up with it in the morning.

I love the 450 power. Always right there when you need it.

I think the best answer is the cleanest one I can find.
Thanks guys.

Try out a ktm 350. I have a 04 rm 125 and love it. Its light and very nimble, thinking about throwing a 134 kit on it to get a little more out of it though. I rode a 2016 ktm 350 for the first time this past monday out at pala and that thing was fast. I didnt like how wide the bike was but a 350 seems like the perfect bike for someone wanting to have fun and not wanting a 2 stroke.

Quit telling the guy to buy other bikes! The first thing he said was "looking for a 450." He's a vet rider and former intermediate racer and has owned at least two 450's. He doesn't need your advice on what type of bike to buy lol.

The kid next door just asked me the question last week , he said he was looking for a 250 4 stroke , i think i talked him out of a used 250 4 stroke just because you dont know how it was maintained and how much a rebuild would be . The 2008 CRF450 would be a good one to look for and you already know that you're gonna like the bike.

Go back with the 08 Honda if you like it! I love mine so much I bought a 08 250 to match lol! Just keep clean filters in, valves are the weak spot! I plan to upgrade mine on next rebuild!
MXA did a article on one several months back and made huge HP, said with mods bike can still be a national contender!
Cheaper to work on too!

Winner! Lol. Seriously though. An 11 or newer yz250 and spend a few hundred bucks to freshen it up and put the 15+ plastic on it. More fun, less trouble and two strokes get biiitches.

Dude wants a 450.

We vets like to keep it simple. I'd say Honda or Yamaha, since he's had experience with both.
OP, those '06 to '09 Yamahas (pre-backwards engine) are a thing of beauty.

This guy gets it.

Otherwise buy a used roach 125 and spend all that money to build a slow bike that needs a new top end every 3 weeks

There is a dealer close to me here that apparently has a warehouse full of leftover bikes from up to 10 years ago. There are brand-new 06 RC replica RM 250s in the crate. Also brand-new left over 250f and 450s from '09 and up of multiple mfg's. If I had $4000 laying around I would scoop up one of those RM 250s in a heartbeat.

You have the right idea thinking 06-09 YZ450 (10 was the all new bike). They are fantastic bikes and ultra reliable. Find a nice gently used one and go ride it!
