We've seen prototype electric start being utilized in MXGP this year. Have to believe Yamaha being the technology leader they are will be the first to put electric start into production. When this happens do you think any of their Japanese compatriots will follow suit? Who do you think would be first?

I venture to say the 2016 Yamahas will be electric start but it will be two years after that before Honda uncorks one. Crystal ball is too cloudy for Suzuki and Kawasaki predictions.

You do of course mean, if Yamaha are the first to follow KTM. No?

Yes. Because starters and batteries weigh 100 pounds.

After riding a KTM for the past 15 months, I am not looking forward to kick starting a bike again! I now know why it is called the magic button.

Just to sure, how many cars/trucks still come equipped with a starting(crank) handle?
When was the last time you used the choke when starting your car?

You just can't fight progress (and win!)......

I can't imagine racing without an e-start now that I've raced with one for 1 1/2 years. You can't tell me that most riders can tell the difference in weight...

I had no idea GP Yamahas were running starters.

Rock, I will be saving my money for one!

I have ridden a '13 WR450 with mx-style suspension added. They run the YZ250 frame and have e-start.

Extra centralized mass will make the bike feel even lighter than it's current 250 pounds?

KTM is 234 dry with e start. Yes you gain a starter and battery, but lose kick start, gears, case, etc.......

They will all be soon....Big advantage.

some guy with a new ktm with a rekluse had his battery die at the track the other day, cant bump start with rekluse, no kickstarter= end of your day. i love the way the new KTMs are built but removing all provisions for a kicker is a shot in the foot. dungey learned that the hard way when his battery died as well and he was left crying as all of the normal bikes rolled on by.

all of my bikes will ALWAYS have a kicker on them. not to mention life is easy when your bike starts within 2 kicks no matter what. i dont mind one bit.

When I stalled my bike after a good start and totally ruined the race I sure wished I had it!

It was an intermittent short and that's one time.....After an easy get off, how many times have riders kicked their bikes till they were blue in the face? First it was fuel injection in bikes, pretty soon it will be E-Starters.

Well you may have just answered a question I had regarding the Rekluse system....I thought with more pro teams running he Rekluse, or some variation thereof, that some of the crashes didn't result in having to restart the bike, as the system disengaged. It did seem a lot of riders who fell were able to just get the bike upright and got rolling right away. Maybe I am all wrong. It happened once before.Laughing

Since I've installed the Rekluse in my KTM with e-start, I have never stalled the bike. This combo gives me great holeshots though. Press the button, with the bike in second, never touch the clutch and go from a dead engine start!

There are ways to bump start with a Rekluse. If you have a EXP it's actually pretty easy.

Why didn't he jump use jumper cables from his truck battery?

I bought a CRF250X, for the simple fact of having an electric start, us short legged folks have a harder time with that kicker....i pretty much had it converted to a 250R off the lot...cam, removed emissions, airbox mod, suspension, pink wire mod, gearing....only thing i havent changed is the wheels...the plus sides are, i also have a kickstart for those dead battery days, and i could take a ride at night out in ocotillo, if i choose to....

i honestly can't understand why bikes don't already come with them. weight on the fatass 450's shouldn't be an issue, they already weigh a fucking 1/8th ton.

cost? nah... each new bike comes with something new each year that the consumer definitely doesn't need and is forced to deal with anyway, driving the price through the roof. air forks and air shocks? give me a fucking break.

as mentioned above, after having an electric start on my bike for a couple years now, i can not see myself ever owning another bike without it (maybe a 125)...

makes me laugh at the morons claiming it's the weight... hah! shed that fucking gut if you're worried about weight on the bike. 5-8 pounds on the bike isn't going to affect you at all.

I threw one of these in my bike...it weighs more then half that of the original stock battery...and has never left me with a dead battery ever...

If these 4 strokes had come with starters from the beginning just think how many races could have been salvaged. I can think of a handful of guys that were leading when they stalled it and then sat there kicking and kicking as the race went on and on and on and.....
