I'd like to see the AMA require a HS Diploma to race professionally...

This sport, at the top level, really limits the education that an aspiring Professional rider can obtain. Other sports, either thru HS participation requiring minimum GPAs and then later sometimes leading to a college education, can actually improve your chances to succeed as a non-Pro athlete

Does a parent of an aspiring Pro-MXer go the home-schooled route and take the .1% chance (I'm being optimistic here) that your kid will become a highly paid Pro and will be able to retire off of their professional motocross eanings or do you at least give your kid a fighting chance of an alternate future in a highly competitive work environment that requires at least some education to be considered even for the most basic of jobs?

Really a parent shouldn't have to choose between following their kids dreams or giving them a back up plan to fall back upon.

It would be brilliant if the sanctioning organizations could simply require a High School Diploma to obtain a Professional racing license and if you didn't have one you can't be issued a Pro license till the age of 19 or something.

I have to say, because I am not a gambling man, even if my child showed real promise at MX, I just couldn't allow them to drop out of school to pursue that dream knowing the likely outcome of that pathway, when I know damn well we could spend the same money and time and guarantee their success as...oh I don't know, an architect, a surgeon, an engineer, etc...

I find it hard to believe that people actually think the Motocross is a way to make a living and even worse when parents think homeschooling is an investment in Jr's motocross future. Motocross is a great hobby but unless your are that one in a million talent then its a way to spend your free time and expendable income and nothing more.

So if a European starts at 15 yrs old in the GPs, he couldn't come race in the u.s....
even tho the AMA is under FIM ruling....lame....

umm..they think that ...that's why they do that....
and 1 in million is way too low...
there are 300 million + in the U.S. ...your analogy would mean there are 300 high $ riders/rides....
there are probably less than 10....so it would be something like 1 in 30 million....
just sayin' ....

A good idea in theory. Will be hard to make it work though. Most racers turn pro when they are 16-18. Hard to focus on high school and later college when you've been pro for a couple of years. In Sweden we have one high school class with just motocross riders. They apply to it like every other high school and you ride, train and have classes focused on motocross and you participate in all the other subjects too. But it only gives you a high school diploma, not a college degree.

I won't knock anyone for emphasizing education but that's going to be a tough requirement as most of these kids drop out of school to race full time. Your right though. You shouldn't have to drop out of school to pursue a MX dream.

There was an effort just a few years ago to boost the minimum age limit in AMA Pro to 18 years of age.

It's a good idea for a ton of reasons. I believe the rule was passed, but later struck down in another act of AMA cowardice.

They were under fire from the Ciancarulo family, their masters, and others of that type.

I have been saying this for quite some time, but I dont think it will ever happen. The powers that control our sport are FAR too short sided to promote an idea that might delay $$$$$ in their pockets. Sad, but true.

I take it spelling isn't something that can be learned via eavesdropping.

Eze dropping...does that come from laxative use?

I love unintentional comedy...especially in a thread about education.

Glad I'm not the only one seeing the entertainment value this thread is providing.

What's the old saying...something along the lines of "enough rope to hang yourself?"

The grammar mistake negates your argument. And you were so close, give it another try.

No offense, but in a thread that's complaining about the quality of education for young riders? They're comedy gold.

Not at all. He's well-spoken, sharp as a tack, and he seems to have turned out okay. Wink
