This sport, at the top level, really limits the education that an aspiring Professional rider can obtain. Other sports, either thru HS participation requiring minimum GPAs and then later sometimes leading to a college education, can actually improve your chances to succeed as a non-Pro athlete
Does a parent of an aspiring Pro-MXer go the home-schooled route and take the .1% chance (I'm being optimistic here) that your kid will become a highly paid Pro and will be able to retire off of their professional motocross eanings or do you at least give your kid a fighting chance of an alternate future in a highly competitive work environment that requires at least some education to be considered even for the most basic of jobs?
Really a parent shouldn't have to choose between following their kids dreams or giving them a back up plan to fall back upon.
It would be brilliant if the sanctioning organizations could simply require a High School Diploma to obtain a Professional racing license and if you didn't have one you can't be issued a Pro license till the age of 19 or something.
I have to say, because I am not a gambling man, even if my child showed real promise at MX, I just couldn't allow them to drop out of school to pursue that dream knowing the likely outcome of that pathway, when I know damn well we could spend the same money and time and guarantee their success as...oh I don't know, an architect, a surgeon, an engineer, etc...

Hell, you can get a diploma and still not be able to read or write so what is the point?
even tho the AMA is under FIM ruling....lame....
The Shop
and 1 in million is way too low...
there are 300 million + in the U.S. ...your analogy would mean there are 300 high $ riders/rides....
there are probably less than 10....so it would be something like 1 in 30 million....
just sayin' ....
It's a good idea for a ton of reasons. I believe the rule was passed, but later struck down in another act of AMA cowardice.
They were under fire from the Ciancarulo family, their masters, and others of that type.
Pit Row
I love unintentional comedy...especially in a thread about education.
