We have two classes here. The 450's and the 250's. The AMA wants these classes to be recognized by skill level and your career status. Therefore they make you point and title out into the 450 class.

The next problem we have is determining who gets what number right? It seems that most insiders, and hardcore fans feel that the lower numbers (within 1-25) should go to the guys with the most clout ie. titles, races won, years in the 450's etc. And I think this does make sense.

Where this falls apart is the advent of the permanent numbering system. I understand the benefit of the permanent numbering system for certain top guys aiding in their marketability to the general public, but the problem is that we can't have both. Both meaning permanent numbers and a ranked number system and have it all work.

How about this.?
1). Each class has it's own set of numbers. They already have different plate back grounds right? Why? Because they are two different classes. So give them each their own set of numbers.

2). The top 25 numbers are given to each class based on the previous years points. So the top finishers would get the honor of running those numbers.

3). Finally, if you want a permanent number for marketing purposes ala Nascar, then it has to be from 26 back.

So we need to develop a system in which this would happen as the riders progress etc.

The AMA isn't making anyone "point out" of any 250 class that carries a National Championship.........
