But here's a new one anyway. What is the smallest car you have gotten away with running a moto rack on? I'm looking at ditching the truck for a small car, namely a mazda 3 hatchback. With gas supposed to go through the roof, lots of room to haul bikes doesn't do me much good if I can't afford to fill the gas tank. Obviously not an ideal setup, but unless I falls ass-backwards into a big pile of money I dont see a better option. The issue I foresee is excessive sag in the rear, which could be a good excuse for some stiff springs, maybe a sway bar while I'm at it. Anyone else running a small vehicle?

Get a jetta TDI with a hitch and buy a small trailer. maybe a landscaping trailer or small enclosed. jetta will get 50+mpg.

I wouldn't do a rack on a small car. Much better off with a small trailer.

That's a nice rack.

I've seen moto racks on the Scion boxes but I would go with a jetta diesel like the previous poster suggested.

That was my #1 choice actually. The issue is that the resale on the TDI is wayyy higher than it's gas powered stablemates. I did the math and basically you have to drive it for 100k before you see your ROI on gas savings versus a comprable 1.8T. If you're looking at used cars with 80k plus on them already, that's pretty much the life of the car. The mazda should be noteably more reliable, and although it's not exactly a prius at 30mpg highway, it beats the hell out of the 14mpg that my Ram 5.7 gets. The other issue is that it looks like I can swap down from my truck and get my loan paid off plus a small car of about the same age and mileage. I'm going back to school so I'm trying to get my bills cut back as much as possible. My truck is by far my biggest expense every month.
