Phil Alderton had called me the year before to say "Rock I have something to tell you but you can't tell a soul' and I said no problem lay it on me brother. "Keith McCarty just called to tell me two of our riders will be on 250 four strokes" and I was more than a little surprised. Guess I shouldn't have been after the YZ400 but talk about another seismic shift in the sport when Ernie raced the YZ250F in Japan.
Pretty cool since he was one of my favorite riders.

Marty Moates raced in Europe on the Ossa before he won Carlsbad 1980.
Magoo raced the 125 USGP at Mid-Ohio that same year Hansen did (and O'Mara won).
Hannah's first GP was years earlier, the epic '76 Mid-Ohio showdown with Marty Smith -- the one time all year Marty beat Bob.
Trampas Parker raced one GP in '87 or '88 before he showed up and blew everyone's minds at the start of the 1989 125cc Grand Prix season.
On foreign soil, only Pomeroy, Smith (Brazil) and Dymond (Argentina) come to mind. Kiedrowski did win the actual 125 GP final in Japan in the 125 class (where Healey flipped off Stanton in the 250 class).
