It's not so much shaving parts as it is using lighter materials. Also, sometimes they drill tiny holes in all the washers to save weight too.

They have the SOHC design, which is pretty compact and lighter compared to the other guys' DOHC. And they spec a lot of parts to be millimeters thinner, which when you add up makes a big difference.

Maybe only having one cam compared to two in most of the other bikes? im no rocket surgeon but i would imagine that helps alittle right?

Very simple...

LESS is MORE.

Look at the general design principals.

Uni-Cam head with substantially LESS mass...including less Inertia.

Through-out their design process they look at what they TRULY need to get the job done.

Nothing MORE, nothing Less.

Caveats: Their front rotors are disposable. Their stock clutch system leaves a lot to be desired (Since '09). Some of the Honda "Bullet-Proof-ness" has gone away...Fraglie Engine components (Valve-train, etc.).

Still, at the end of the day...an excellent bike.

the crf wheel set is lighter than any other set of factory wheels to my knowledge. i believe the actual rim isnt as beefy as what comes stock on the other brands. you are talking about stock bikes off the showroom floor, correct?

I'd have to see the Honda weighs less for me to believe it. Doubtful.

I take it you don't spend much time around modern big bore MX'ers. The Honda feels lighter everywhere, not just on the track, but even putting it on the stand or loading into the truck. I know, because every time I load my pig of a YZ450f up into the pickup, and then load up my buddy's 2011 CRF450r, it feels like a 250f. If it's only a 7 lb. difference, it feels like a lot more.

Everything including the frame is filled with helium...

JK, if you look at other Mfr's bikes, especially motors, you see lots of extra castings and brackets and such, whereas Honda doesn't do this. And all the handware is only as big and long as it needs to be to get the job done.

Go grab the YZF and the CRF by the Front-Wheel when they're on the stand and see which one feels lightest from that perspective.

Whoever offers those new Showa Air forks on a production bike will have the lightest 450.

Most people have the placebo effect going on when it comes to suspension.

I can't tell you how many people I've seen say they can feel a couple clicks here and there, and then when you re-set it to stock they think your the best suspension guy ever.

I just got an 09 Honda 450. My last 450 was on 07 Honda, which felt smaller then everything else .......and my 250F was an 07. This 09 feels smaller and lighter then my 07 250F in the turns....and turns better. It only feels slightly 450ish at high speed. Awsome bike.

Look closely at a Honda beside the other brands and you can see a lot of the places they shaved the weight.

You'll have to ask Bones! I haven't gotten near the Air forks yet.

I wonder if you have to re-balance the bike if you put them on a current production bike? Move the engine forward, a-la-Bubba?

haha, I did this to my buddy, he kept bitching about the bike doing this and that, so I turned his comp clickers in and turned them right back out to where they were, with him standing right there watching. With me telling him how much better it was going to be. He came back in saying yeah, it is better, it isn't doing this or that anymore. I just smiled and still haven't told him.

Ok, if for some reason you think MXA faked those numbers, and don't believe everyone's first hand experience with the Honda like my own, go see for yourself. Go to a dealer, and just push the different bikes around and sit on them. The Honda is very noticeably slimmer and lighter. People aren't exaggerating when they say it feels like a 250f. My coworker and I each respectively bought a 2011 and 2010 CRF450, and went riding that weekend, and didn't talk to each other til we came back to work. The first things we each said about it was (me) "It feels way more like a 250f than a 450." (him) "It feels like I'm on a 250 2 stroke." I came off of a 2009 KX450 and he came off of a 2009 YZ250 smoker/ 2009 YZ450.

But if someone on a forum says it's NOT true, it automatically isn't?
