How do you load your bike(s) in the back of your van?

Edited Date/Time 1/29/2016 7:31pm
For years I've been leaning my bikes up against the side of the van but no matter how much rag & foam I put under the grips or against the side panels/seat, it till manages to rub. I wanna stand them up inside but not sure about how to go about it. The most bikes I'll ever carry would be 3. I have a LWB Ford Transit, about the same size a Mercedes Sprinter if they're not sold in the US.

Astros you just had to suck the forks down with a tie down, that was before air forks though. I had 3 tie downs, 2 on the bars and one through the rear wheel it just floated without a wheel chock.

Just straight in with two tie downs? Sprinter holds two next to each other.

Risk racing makes kind of a cool setup. Sold one of them at a sophisticated I was working for but never saw it used. Some Bros on here have em.

I use these and I have screwed eye bolts into pre existing threaded holes in one of the roof supports, the I used tie Downs to hold it upright from the ceiling. It does not compress the forks and is a solid hold.

Plastic bottle - cut top off (bit of a pain to get the right diameter)
2 tennis balls, cut top off one, cut top & bottom off other
Put 1st into bottle then other, cover outside of bottle in duck tape and will last a long time.
I put my bike tight to inside of van and it never moves, grips don't get ripped at end.

I usually sit down in my camp chair, crack open a cool brew, take off my boots.....then watch my wife push the bike into the van.

Get fold down D-rings for the floor that sit flush when there is nothing hooked to them. Go to the hardware store and get supplies to build a turnbuckle for each foot peg. Hook the turnbuckles to the D-ring and the foot pegs then tighten. Cheap, simple, and clean.

Here is how my buddy does it, and so far it's the best i've seen just using tie downs.

For this example we're loading the bike on the left side...

Place bikes in strait and turn wheels to the left or corner of wall/side.
There are 2 D-rings, one on the wall near the corner on the left hand side, one on the ground on the right.

with wheel in the corner (handlebars slightly turned) take a tie down hooked on the D-ring, and wrap it around the right side of the handlebars and hook the opposite end on the same D ring.

Now from the ground D-ring, use a tie down and hook it to the right (yes same side) end of the bar like normal.

This works super well, bike doesn't smack the side of the van, or swing into the over bikes. Stays put...I wish I had a van now...

A long time member here "justmx" was warming his bike on stand beside his dodge van.

The one with that big window behind the driver. It vibrated off, caught the shifter and launched into the van sticking the front wheel thru that window.

That is one gorgeous Yamaha. Where can I find that graphics kit? Was yours already white or did you have to buy plastics + graphics?

How about a metal arm that hinges up from the van wall? On the other end have a padded U Bolt that attaches around the fork leg between top and bottom triple clamp. (Run some rubber hose over it). Couple of R Clips rather than nuts on the U Bolt for quicker fastening. Bike would be held solid and can't rock. Grips would never hit the van sides.

Just an idea.

I'm no scientist or anything, but wouldn't cutting the top of a tennis ball off already give you a top and bottom?.....or do they use rectangular tennis balls in Europe?

For safety, have a tie down to an eyelet behind the bike. Use a big washer under the van so if there were a head on the bike won't become a projectile. A friend of mine lost 2 friends with 2 bikes in a van during a head on. The kid sleeping between the bikes was ok.

Thanks a lot. It's a JGRMX kit by factory effex. And yes I got the white plastic kit for it. I'm going to do a build thread for that bike soon.

i just turn the wheel towards the wall and three point it snugly. the tie down going from the peg to the back is what seals the deal
