So in your comments this week about visiting Durhamtown you said, " it's a little out of the way for a national". Does this mean no chance? Pala is out of the way, so was Binghampton. Looks like they are building another national type track at Durhamtown.........

It just wouldn't work for a National. It is just too far out with no acomodations around.

This makes it great for the riding area that it is though, super place.

Mik, I am afraid it is too far out. There are not a lot of hotels nor towns for a spectator draw. It's a fantastic place but it would be tough to hold a successful pro national, in my opinion. And Pala is six miles off the interstate, in the heart of the SoCal motocross scene, with Temecula and all the hotels 11 miles away. Plus there's the Pala Casino itself, one mile away. It's not perfect, but it was certainly doable.

As for Broome, I hate to see it go. That happened a few year back and I think the event was sold to Texas.

What ever caused Gatorback to abandon the National Circuit? Any chance it will come back ?

What national is getting the axe? All of them have such history in our sport except Pala and Freestone. People are going to freak out if Southwick, Red Bud, Unadilla, Millville, Budds Creek, Washougal or Hangtown are out. My guess is either Steel City, High Point or Pala are out.

I would further deduce that to either Steel City or High Point. Most likely Steel City being that most riders like the High Point national.

There's only room for 12 rounds, as that's what the OEMs and teams expect and the schedule is at full capacity with 30 races (17 SX events, 12 MX and the MXoN) unless it's a one-off event like the Monster Energy Cup, and even then it wasn't attended by all.
So yes, one race would have to move, and that's been a sticking point -- no one wants to stop hosting their national.

As for Gatorback, the OEMs didn't really like it -- Jody called it "the orphan national" -- because it was all by itself in the middle of the SX series. It was hard to take time to test and get ready for one national, and it would be even harder today with all of the technology compared to what it was back in 1997. So the promoter of the event, Bill West, made the decision to turn the Gatorback National into the Tampa Supercross. It was a matter of a convenience for the teams and since he was also part of the SX promotional group at the time, he was still the promoter.

I don't think any team, factory or privateer that wants more rounds.

How about Lake Sugar tree? They used to have Nationals there and its only about 30 minutes from Greensboro NC. They have alot of room for parking and the facilities have come a long way in the past couple of years. The track is big and with some small changes could be great and you can see the whole track from most of the spectator areas.

That was then, So without the timing of the Gatorback National being the hindrance, as it will fall into the normal 12 round National schedule correct? So if this is the case, would Gatorback facilities be adequate?

Lake Sugar Tree is not far enough south, and Gainesville may be too far south. But I haven't been back to Gatorback in several years and I hear it's pretty good again. There are a lot of good places out there to consider, but a lot of work and a lot of other things need to fall into place before it can happen.

There's a lot of fans in NC that would drive as far south as GA, but no further IMO. Just food for thought.

kijen, the OEMs and the satellite teams pretty much all feel that way. And yes, their input and needs, along with privateers, have to be included in the puzzle, always.

Hey DC

this mike the owner of Durhamtown

sorry I missed you my son crashed on his bike sunday and is in ICU in Agusta in a coma I have been down there for a week

We are in the process of clearing for a national style track Mark Barnett was here last weekend looking it over for me

we have a plan to build a track with a Ampitheater in the center of it we have begun clearing for it

I had MArk to look at the areas for track, PIT row and vendors etc in the new area it will be opposite side of the road from the BOMBER track behind the FLAT TRACK and GP TRACK approx 150 acres

camping will be behind the BOMBER clearing approx 200 acres

we also have 2 major music festivals planned for the spring with approx 20,000 - 40,000 attending each and camping for the weekend

we have 3 of the Warrior Dash, Tought Mudder running style events booked with a tv show on one of them planned
they are expecting 10,000 -15,000 to attend

Durhamtown is modifying into a major event facility as well as remaining a top destination off road facility

new single track is being added along with the new track

Durhamotwn has some new major events coming in the near future

thanks for coming by and checking out Durhamtown we appreciate you considering DP as an option

DC ......I am being serious here but......Why is the schedule limited to only 30 race dates? NASCAR has 36 and that still leaves 16 weeks off.

For 95% of the riders.....Race day is pay day right? Seems they would want more potential pay days.

And the MXoN should have room left in the schedule but...... only 3 riders get a pay day from this.

I think a 17-race championship and a 12-race championship are more than enough for a full season. Motocross and supercross are hard on the body, hard on the infrastructure... I personally think NASCAR is too long, and so are baseball and hockey. Only the NFL and college football seem to have it right here on the American sports landscape, and SX/MX at 30 is just enough to keep us wanting more.

3 less supercrosses and 2 more nationals would be a much better schedule IMO. I know I know, feld would have a cow.......

You wrote an article in reason for being a few years ago that spoke a lot of the NFL formula. The idea was that the NFL gives fans just enough to keep them coming back Sunday after Sunday, without boring them. I think we have too much supercross.

I know you don’t have any control over supercross but as a huge fan of both supercross and motocross, I think supercoss is a bit long and the nationals are a bit short.

Just my 02 cents

What, 162 baseball games too much baseball for you DC? How about 82 regular season hockey games? I agree the length of these schedules are a total joke. Mx/Sx is also full thank you very much, especially if you are the one training your ass off every day to race in em.
