Helmet Shootout...?

I'm curious to know if anyone on vital has heard of any publications that have done a helmet shootout...? You know, maybe with an experiment that has been set up to take measurements of forces transferred to the inside of the helmets with impacts..? I recently loaned a friend my helmet for a day of riding and he ended up face-planting into the dirt at Milestone and was out for a good minute and a half....Needless to say I'm now in the market for another dome protector, but I'd like to see a write up of the best proven helmets out there.

If anyone knows about something like this this, please let me know.

One of the mags did something about five or six years ago by buying and testing a ton of them in a lab setting... But most of those models are no longer current. It's an expensive process to get all the helmets and have them properly tested, or I'd love to do something along those lines for Vital.

You'd think companies would want to sponsor something like that, would definitely result in some sales at the end...

I can imagine that it would be pretty costly for a consumer to do one of these tests, seeing as how you would have to buy at least 4 of each helmet to get a full spectrum of the forces you would experience. Front, back, left, and right sides.. not to mention the top. However, it seems to me like companies would want to have their helmets proven if they are confident in their product and would be willing to supply enough test samples.. I think I might be digging into some sketchy waters. hopefully someone sends me a freebie to shut me up Tongue I only joke... Seriously though, I think the consumers need to know which products are proven to actually be the best.

Helmets and Track designs are what really needs the full MX community to get behind.

The majority of helmet tests I have seen are more for road riding in my opinion.

I want better protection for heads it is the concussions so many riders suffer from with some not even knowing they are in danger. Surely something can be done instead of the dot snell EU tests, some test that is for our sport, even though there are not enough to make it viable for manufacturers.

Tracks need to flow but also make the rider think and make them more skilful as in off camber corners not all berms, which also need to slope rather than a vertical wall at the base of berms.

After hearing how helmet companies go about this, it sounds like we'd need more like 15 of each model to do the full range of accurate testing. Beyond that, it's the cost of the lab testing that none of us media outlets have the money to throw around.

Yea, you definitely have a point there. The lab experiments and testing that the manufacturers do in house is probably a very time consuming and expensive process. However, that's probably not the kind of test that consumers would expect coming from a publication that's not fortunate enough to fork out the thousands of bucks on these tests anyways. But with that being said, I think a sort of "myth busters" type experiment might get some valuable data as to which helmets at least keep an egg from cracking under certain amounts of forces. I don't know, just brainstorming here. These companies manufacture tons of units every year in several different color ways. They've gotta have a few to spare for the sake of science!

We'll do one in conjunction with the Pit Racer World Championships. Everyone lines up around a circle. Those who are still conscious transfer to the next round until a winner is determined. Wink

The fact of the matter is no matter how much testing you do on a helmet there are still to many factors involved that cannot be tested. If I crashed on the same jump that the OP friend did with the same helmet on there could be a good chance that I might walk away from the crash while your friend takes a dirt nap.

Wow. Don't mix your energy drinks and espresso, kids.

I guess you missed where I recently checked in with Reed, Canard, and DeCoster to ask what we can do to improve safety.

You need to step away from the sport. No healing anything with you, find something far less dangerous to do cause you are on a mission to ruin the sport we all love. Sorry for you lose but the helmets and tracks of today are 100 times safer than when I grew up.

We have had good luck with the Shoei and Bell moto 9. We like the Bell better but the paint is really bad. All the helmets we've had have either faded or just straight flaked off, have one at the dealership now to be sent back.

But we keep wearing them cause he has not had any head related problems where the Shoei has knocked him a little silly a couple times.

Yeah right i am gunna ruin the sport ffs.

As for you Team G if i get over there i will have no problem with saying to your or the owner my thoughts

i dont drink and tell it like it is

As for boss speaking with riders anout what can be done for safety ffs it is 2016 and this is asked every year.

Fuk we lost another speedway rider yesterday and another in a critical condition. the report said 5 deaths in last x anount of years at this track. again i am not blaming the helmets but surely with the super power knowledge something can be done to help head impacts.

I don't think it'd be that expensive.

There's no need for a lab, get a test dummy and g force meter. The lit pro measures G forces, so that's an expense that can be spread out to other tests and segments, assuming it works inside a test dummy head? And everybody needs a test dummy.
The top helmet manufactors should give yall a few helmets for free, could be very good advertisement for them. You'll probably have to buy a cheap helmet to compare them to. But really, what's a handful of Walmart specials?
Drop the test dummy with no helmet from 6' then with each helmet on. Drop him face down, on the side, and on his back. You could also repeat each test to see how well the helmets handle a 2nd hit.
Then do a moving test. Get the truck going 30mph, and push the dummy off the tailgate. Repeat with each helmet.
You could also measure how much force gets put on the neck while doing the truck test. Do a couple tests with the same helmet, and get an average.
Measure ventilation, fill a tub with hot water. ~120°F. Get 1 person for each helmet, fill a balloon with the water and set em in front of a fan. Check the balloon temp in an hour. Best ventilating helmet is gonna have the coldest water ballon.

Figure 6 or 7 helmets for each brand. Not bad if the walmart special is the only brand you have to buy.

just get an approved, good fitting and comfortable helmet.

a helmet can only do so much, it can't change physics and stop your brain from moving in your skull from the force of an impact which is what causes the most damage.
