Long story short, I had a little spill this weekend. Was in the ER for a good chunk of Saturday and released same day (though they advised I stay the night, but didn't fight when I said I wanted to leave). I was unconscious for a little bit and have a bruised lung. I'm still coughing up blood today, though irregularly.

Anybody have experience with this? I know all injuries are different, but any idea of how long the coughing up blood is going to happen? I have no issues breathing, taking deep breaths, etc... And usually have to clear my throat (like hocking a loogie) and spit up blood maybe 4 times a day.

Thanks in advance. I just freaks me out a bit.

I did that before too. Doctors told me to take a week or two off and id be fine. I actually got life flighted because they thought my lung was collapsing. .. 9 hrs in the ER, cat scans, ekg, and many more tests later I was released and on my way.

I really only coughed up blood for a day. Just soreness on that side of my body

I suppose if it's still happening tomorrow I'll call the doctors.

Yes, coughed up blood for 24 hours or so, and was sore for a good week. I would definitely get checked out if you're still coughing up blood.

Haven't bruised one but I have punctured one along with a few cracked ribs a couple of years ago. Didn't cough up any blood but it did hurt to breathe. Like you said, they're all different. At my age I've learned to not rush the healing process. Better to take the time and know that you're healed than to rush it and potentially prolong the injury, if that makes any sense. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I had a buddy tip over low speed and crack a couple ribs. ER and xrays, good to go. About a week later he was moving a couch and got winded really quick. Went to the ER where they pumped a pint and a half of blood out of his punctured lung.

Pay attention to what's going on and stay on top of it!

They told me to make sure to take 10 deep breaths an hour, regardless of pain. The weird thing is - there is no pain. I would have no idea that I did anything to the lung if it weren't for the blood.
