Has JGR always ran CF shrouds?

I don't think they have... is this a new development for this years bike?

Pretty trick, GP style!

Makes you wonder how much lighter their bike is compared to the JSE/L&M bike from last year...that is, if it is any lighter.

If I'm not mistaken, they ran Cycra shrouds last year.

For having such a turdish reputation those high budget Yamaha teams sure make those 450's look pretty damn exotic.

Could that just be part of the graphics?

possibly. that top bolt hole will tell the tale. To me it looks like it could go either way, but I am kinda leaning toward black plastic shrouds because I can't really see a definite CF pattern where the shroud attaches at the top.

I wonder if carbon fiber graphics weigh less then regular graphics? It's things like this that keep me up at night......pacing around the house.

I thought carbon fiber fenders, shrouds, and number plates were not allowed because of worries about sharp jagged carbon fiber broken in a crash which could injure a rider worse than plastic could. I do not recall if it was AMA or the GP's but I swear I had heard that before.

It does look to be part of the graphics.

I still think the shroud is indeed CF with ultra thin graphics over it. That twill just looks too real for it to be graphics, plus I don't think JGR is lame enough to do something like CF look alike graphics on a pro level machine.

Someone get to the bottom of this. Weege...to the shop, pronto!

I would hate for someone with CF shrouds to slam into me. They should not even be allowed in a race. I'm thinking those are just the graphics.

So...if they are graphics? opinions? I kinda think it's lame, even if it looks real enough to make some of us scratch our heads.

Its carbon guys, look at the vent hole and the right corner, there is no way to get graphics wraped around that nicely.

It looks like Carbon to me. If you look from where the graphics are cut for the bends, the carbon fiber extends further than the actual graphic.

I would hate to crash with that on the bike. It looks cool, but the risk/reward doesn't seem to be that much better.

Here is your answer, straight from the man himself:

"We are testing carbon fiber shrouds, in fact we are testing quite a few innovative concepts"

That is what i love about JGR, they have all the resources and not afraid to experiment and try new trick stuff.

Hopefully it's some "NASA" type of CF that bends and doesn't break.

Like everyone already stated, I wouldn't want to be on the same track with those shrouds if not.

You'd have to think the CF shrouds would better protect the radiators in the event of an accident.

Thanks Scottie.

And I agree, I see them bringing some pretty cool stuff to the table over the next couple of years.

True, but I don't know how well Carbon fiber flexes.

The only good side to this is weight savings and the higher average of not having to replace your shrouds due to wear and tear. Plus you shouldn't get those ugly light marks like the yamaha and kawasaki plastics get when they bend.

Might make the bike feel too rigid. Could transfer vibration from the motor to the tank.

But hey, they look super cool!

2 years ago Phillippaerts had his carbon subframe on the Yamaha snap while in a moto at Mantova... it sure was funny watching that thing flop around like a fish out of water for over half a moto slapping him in the ass.

CF can be relatively flexible, just not typically as much as plastic can. The bigger issue is that when CF fails it is almost always catastrophic, in that the part loses it's functionality. CF parts break and splinter into shards of resin and carbon weave, there is little plasticity or ability to remain deformed like plastic has.

I can't see those things cracking very easily. It would have to be a hell of a hit. Even if they did crack they graphics would keep the pieces together.

I just couldn't imagine the weight savings being the reason to develop such a part. The plastic versions couldn't be that much different in total weight. Just seems the strength of the CF parts would be the reason to develop such.

I think these are part of the slimming of the front of the bike which was part of what James liked. Look how close the tip of the shroud is to the triples. I still dont like those number plates that extend down with zip ties. Zip ties just dont mix on such a trick bike.
