Hey guys... I know the back story behind this photo between the lawyers, etc... But I'm really trying to get my hands on a copy of this iconic Oakley poster of Ricky Carmichael or even a picture (minus the Oakley logo if necessary).
Does anybody know the photographers name that shot it or how to get in contact with him?
Even better would be if anybody has a mint copy of this poster they be willing to sell me?
It's a long shot but I thought this would be the best place to inquire!

The problem with the billboard was the fact that it was shot by a part-time photographer who did not have a press pass for the event—he shot it from the stands. He later apparently handed the picture to Chad Watts, then Carmichael's mechanic at Splitfire/Pro Circuit Kawasaki, who in turn let Johnny O'Mara—RC's coach and an Oakley goggle man—take the photo back to work. From there it ended up on the billboard, and later a bunch of very cool Oakley posters. When the photographer spotted his image on the billboard and posters, he wanted a sizable royalty, even though he apparently wasn't allowed to sell images from the event he’d attended, as printed on the back of every SX event ticket back then.... Lawyers got involved and it was downhill from there for everyone but Ricky. He just kept winning and winning and winning."
The Shop
I plan on blowing it up to 3' x 6' or whatever dimensions are realistic and framing it for my office. The image is just too small and what makes this image even better is the FULL version. That is the true picture that I'm after!
Pit Row
Not what you are looking for, but here's the RacerX...
Does anyone on here know the least invasive way to get that done? NEWMAN?
P.S. Love that helmet mount. Where did you get it?
I was always wondering if that "no commercial photography blah blah" on the ticket had
been challenged. Guess so.
Easiest way is if anyone knows the original photog of the picture.
if this hoopla went to litigation or whatever, the names are recorded somewhere. Added
plus is that FTE is a damn fine photographer himself and might find it interesting to
snoop a little.
Or someone MUST know a long time art director at Oakley.
Or DC would have a lead.
One issue is for sure the photographer won't be jumping up and down saying
"I'll sell you a print!!" because he probably had to sign bullshit papers.
(Speaking from experience on that one. I ridiculed some local artwork
years ago and the owners got PISSED OFF hahahhahhaha )
Here is a close-up of the autograph as well. It's mounted on a foam backing board so I'm not sure how scanning it would work. Obviously I don't want there to be any issues with copying anything but like somebody said in an earlier post it has been almost 20 years so and who knows if getting a copy is even a viable option. I wouldn't want anything in return I have just always loved the picture and thought it was cool to see this pop up.
These are the only markings on the entire photo so I would be leaning towards Oakley having the rights to it.
