Purchased my first big bore two stroke and I couldn't be more enthralled. My boss, who has a handful of KX500s, decided he was ready to let one go, sort of. Initially he liked the idea of selling off some of his toys, but when it came time to actually doing it, he struggled to let pieces of his history go. After talking back and forth for a few weeks, he decided he was ready to let the 1995 go to someone close to him. Purchased in 95, he was the original owner. Put a year of riding on it, drained the fuel out of it, and parked it. And so, it has sat in the corner of our warehouse since late 1996. Finally talked numbers, promised I wouldn't make a sideshow out of it, and that I would get it back into condition so that he could someday ride it again. Can't wait to put some love back into this gorgeous bike and go ride the monster! Plan on doing some GPs with it and possibly the two stroke series but overall just enjoy being back on a two stroke. You'll see me and this bike around the Southern California tracks. Please come say hi! Would love to hear any stories or advice out there regarding these bikes.

Congrats, that's a thrill ride, right there. Had a 96, I recall going to a 51 tooth rear on mine, for moto. Then again, I was well over 200 pounds then, probably 250 in gear. Ran about 95 mil sag, to get that fuckin pig to turn, that was a huge help. If you go to KXRiders.com, someone has done a rear link for those, that really helps. Think it's a sticky in the 500 Original forum. The front brake sucks, go buy a stainless line, and an oversize rotor kit, if you can. You'll thank me, when your corner isn't 60 feet behind you, and you're picking branches out of the goggle opening in your helmet. A PC pipe and silencer really woke my motor up, might want to consider that too. Oh, ditch the stock bars, they'll bend when you lean the bike against your trailer. Enjoy.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Have some bars, mounts, bushings, grips, filters and tires on their way. Going to change all the fluids this week, bleed the brakes, change the trans oil and send the suspension out to get some re-freshening. I think once all that is done, and the carb is cleaned out, it should be ready to go play. Definitely looking for an oversized rotor kit for it. Every single 500 survivor I've talked to recommended upgrading the system one way or the other. Steel braided brake lines certainly couldn't hurt!

That's an awesome purchase.... Put on a decent pipe and silencer, skim the head for a little higher compression, run a v force 3 reed block, give all the power valve a clean out and run a billet clutch basket.....She will rip Evil

I run a kx500 motor in my sidecarcross bike and she's near 70bhp, we run genuine Kawasaki rod, piston, rings, bearings, seals, gaskets etc. You will love it, stick some photos up when she's ready to roll.

Here's mine.....

Godzilla lives! Had a bit of prep work to do to get it back in riding and racing condition. Luckily, everything went fairly well. Pulled the carb drain off and found some lovely black slime in the bottom of the bowl. Had to eat my words regarding the fuel being drained. Decided it would be in the best interest to just do a full carb rebuild. So far, genuine Kawasaki parts have been incredibly easy to get through the local dealer. Also found some dirty lithium grease that had made its way to the edge of the airbox side

All went back together seemingly easy and the bike sparked to life after five or so kicks. I was enthralled.

Flushed the coolant, Trans oil, and brakes. Greased all the bearings and checked all the bolts. Lastly, picked up some Uni filters, my favorite Pro Taper bar in my traditional color, some bar mounts, bushings, Eks Brand grips and Acerbis hand guards. Also got the biggest pair of Maxxis SI's I could get. Time to ride.

Woke up to a rainy Saturday here in Southern California and headed straight to Pala. The weather turned out to be cool and cloudy, and the dirt was prime for the location

What an amazing bike to say the least. Extremely unique and predictable as could be. Next step is to get the suspension freshened up, and do it all again next weekend. Still have an ear to ear grin on my face the following day

In 1991 I bought an 89 cr500 from college bike shop in lansing mi for 1800 dollars, you couldn't give these things away then, traded a snap on tool box I paid 600 for for an 87 kx500, now people are asking 2k for farted out old 500s lol, it's like everyone is just discovering them or something

Small update. Raced the beast for the first time at Comp Edge. Through four practices, I got the carb pretty dialed for the elevation. Luckily this thing isn't too picky. Went 1-1 in the 25+ goon class and had a fantastic time.

When I was loading up (bike was still very warm) noticed the trans oil through the looking glass seemed really low. Changed it before the race. Upon further investigation, noticed that the countershaft seal went. Is this something you have to split the case for or can it be done on the outside?

Pull the countershaft sproket and find out. Gonna have to pull it no matter what.
Odds are, the case doesn't need split.

Tell me you are going to race the TWMX series on that beast? Think i'll be running the 25+ class, as well. Would like to hear that thing rip.

That thing is sweet! People eat up the misconception that 500s are untamable beasts, to me they are actually really easy to ride, especially with a big flywheel weight. I raced my 01 CR at the Hangtown amateur day and it was super fun, damn thing wanted to punt my light ass off of every braking bump but it was beyond awesome to get that thing out there. I pretty much just use it for extended hillclimbs, but when I saw there was an open two stroke class I just had to pull the extensions off and give it a run. Surprisingly enough, it was the only 500 in the class.Sad

If you ever make it up north let me know, I'll bust out the 5 again and we'll have a 500 track day.Cool

GREAT find!

Remove circlip, sprocket, collar and o-ring(s). Pull seal and replace, without splitting cases. Check condition of collar and replace o-ring(s) and circlip.
