Purchased my first big bore two stroke and I couldn't be more enthralled. My boss, who has a handful of KX500s, decided he was ready to let one go, sort of. Initially he liked the idea of selling off some of his toys, but when it came time to actually doing it, he struggled to let pieces of his history go. After talking back and forth for a few weeks, he decided he was ready to let the 1995 go to someone close to him. Purchased in 95, he was the original owner. Put a year of riding on it, drained the fuel out of it, and parked it. And so, it has sat in the corner of our warehouse since late 1996. Finally talked numbers, promised I wouldn't make a sideshow out of it, and that I would get it back into condition so that he could someday ride it again. Can't wait to put some love back into this gorgeous bike and go ride the monster! Plan on doing some GPs with it and possibly the two stroke series but overall just enjoy being back on a two stroke. You'll see me and this bike around the Southern California tracks. Please come say hi! Would love to hear any stories or advice out there regarding these bikes.
Gotta love five hundos!
The Shop
Great find.
I run a kx500 motor in my sidecarcross bike and she's near 70bhp, we run genuine Kawasaki rod, piston, rings, bearings, seals, gaskets etc. You will love it, stick some photos up when she's ready to roll.
Here's mine.....
All went back together seemingly easy and the bike sparked to life after five or so kicks. I was enthralled.
Flushed the coolant, Trans oil, and brakes. Greased all the bearings and checked all the bolts. Lastly, picked up some Uni filters, my favorite Pro Taper bar in my traditional color, some bar mounts, bushings, Eks Brand grips and Acerbis hand guards. Also got the biggest pair of Maxxis SI's I could get. Time to ride.
Woke up to a rainy Saturday here in Southern California and headed straight to Pala. The weather turned out to be cool and cloudy, and the dirt was prime for the location
What an amazing bike to say the least. Extremely unique and predictable as could be. Next step is to get the suspension freshened up, and do it all again next weekend. Still have an ear to ear grin on my face the following day
Pit Row
When I was loading up (bike was still very warm) noticed the trans oil through the looking glass seemed really low. Changed it before the race. Upon further investigation, noticed that the countershaft seal went. Is this something you have to split the case for or can it be done on the outside?
Odds are, the case doesn't need split.
If you ever make it up north let me know, I'll bust out the 5 again and we'll have a 500 track day.
Remove circlip, sprocket, collar and o-ring(s). Pull seal and replace, without splitting cases. Check condition of collar and replace o-ring(s) and circlip.
