Did Honda switch from orangey-red to red in '85 or was that just the factory bikes? My '84 CR125 was definitely orangey-red.

Does anyone know why Johnny O' was the only Honda guy running a rear disc brake?

Who was #356? I'll look tonight. These where old slides that I scanned, and since it is kind of slow doing that, I only scanned the ones I knew for sure.

Don't hold your breath though because I probably only took pictures of the riders I knew from reading about them in European magazines. I was a poor student (with a Canon AE-1 program and a lowly Sigma 35-105 lens) It actually cost money to take pictures back then.

Probably just personal preference. I think riders may have had more freedom back then when picking components. I know they have a lot of freedom today but the factories like things to look uniform and a disc vs. drum brake is a huge visual difference.

Do you have any shots of 790 on a Husky?

Or any shots of the wall we had to go up?

#256 would be me, I have a few pics of that day but very poor quality. Maybe you have one of Billy Liles laying on top of my bike in a bowl turn?

Yup 1985. I was at that race. 411 Rodney Barr, 332 Keith Turpin, 396 I think is Chris Coleman (?)

No, not till 1988, but they always looked red in pictures.

That was a blast from the past!

I remember the drop into the quarry after the start as being very scary as a Pro-Am in 83, 84. It looks so lame now. Guess that's why I didn't end up scooter ridin' for a living!

I also remember watching Bradshaw wail around there on an 80 (or 65?)... you could tell...

Thanks for the pics!

Evaryone ran discs except Hannah. I recall reading somewhere that he didn't care for the feel of the rear disc. He ran rear drum the full season. Lechien ran a rear disc on his SX 250, as did Bailey. Also, if memory serves correct, I think 157 was Larry Brooks.

Man, there was nothing like watching Bailey and Glover battle on those 500's.

It was listening to Poetry while watching ballet with a smell like hot cinamon rolls and a sound like the sirens calling, and if you were fortunate enough to be able to be roosted, the dirt tasted like praline pecan ice cream.

Having mind pump. Who was no. 10 on the Kawasaki 500?
8/25/2010 6:31am
I was there, thanks for the pics.

#10 was Alan King of Team Tamm I believe. RL's 125 blew the 2nd moto.

I love it! You got some pictures of the sideways wall in the background of some of your pictures. Hope you dont mind I copyied and cropped the pictures.

Today's riders would shit with something that difficult on a MX track.

It actually didn't take that much time. I used a Pacific Image 3650 scanner with a 50 slide magazine. So basically load it, scan, @#$@#$@# to yourself because you had the slides flipped, reload everything and let it go for a couple of hours.

This scanner has an infrared light in addition to the regular light, so it can detect dust and scratches and fix the picture on its own. These are straight scans out of it. No retouch of any kind.
I also have a Nikon film scanner that uses the same technology. The difference between my old scanner that didn't have that infrared light and the new ones is very obvious.

Hey, can you post all 36 slides on the link? For some reason, i can't view any of the ones posted on the Vital page.

I was there too. Mickey Diamond was on a Husky that day, he gave me one of his jerseys. Nice guy.

Thanks

it's crazy how hardpacked all the tracked used to be. now, they dig them super deep and keep lots of water on the them.

Shouldn't this be in the Old School moto Section? Hardly seems relevant what some old timers did 25 years ago riding boat anchors!
