I posted this in the new rdier forum with zero responses....

I grew up with a friend who had dirt bikes and I went riding with him quite a bit. I have ridden almost anything from a 50cc to a CR500. I have also ridden street bikes quite a bit so I am very comfortable on a bike... That being said I have never owned my own bike and I am looking to buy one soon. I am looking at either a crf250 or 450, year 2009 or newer.

I'm 5' 11" and weigh 180 lbs. I don't really know what I will get into yet with the bike, I know I want to get into racing and I've always liked hill climbing. I am leaning towards getting the 450 as I think the 250 will get old after a few months and I will want that extra kick. I am no expert though and have not ridden either of the newer crf models YET!

My friend is also getting a bike at the same time as me so we will be riding a lot together. He is sold on getting a 250 and this is probably the biggest factor of me getting the 250, so we will have the same power/class if we race.

Any advice on helping me choose would help out a lot!

Too many people have this mentality that the'll get bored of the power of a 250 after a while. Unless you're a bigger guy or a fast a/b rider you're just being lazy. Newer 250's have plenty of power

don't buy a used 250. try to find a leftover model and save some cash. new is always best unless you luck out and find a gem, stay away from buying kids bikes too

Would you recommend buying a used 450? New is definitely better but twice the price.

Gotta agree with Sharkey here. Buying a used 250F is a scary deal. The life expectancy of those things are "iffy " to say the least. With that being said........if you haven't ridden all that much on any of the newer bikes , even a tame 450 ( such as the Honda ) could be a scary ride for you. Get a little tired in the hands and forearms , get a little whiskey throttle.....and that 450 will come alive on you in a heart beat!

If you have a chance....try both the 250F and 450F.......you should be able to decide from there. My advice would be to get the 450 at your weight and height.....but to also take baby steps with it. Like I said....a 450 is a totally different animal. They feel all nice and mellow...until the moment that you trust it......then she gets a mind all her own and you go on a ride strait to the hospital.

Definitely get a newer bike.......just treat the bike with respect , and it will respect you back.

The newest you can afford......but look for one with as low of hours on it as you can. I'm a kawi guy now......but buying used , you should be looking at a Honda to be honest. They hold their value quite well and are built extremely well.

Like what TG posted above.....the 11' - 12' Honda's were great bikes! I own a 12' KXF450 and wouldn't trade it for a Honda.....ever. But that's me. Just getting into the sport.....you can't beat a Honda.

Take your time and look for the good deals. Don't just jump on the first one you see.

250's are grenades, Just go with the 450. The 07 - 08 crf450's are fantastic bikes, pretty much bullet proof. Find one with low hours, be patient and the right one will surface. 11-12 crf's are great also. I've owned both. The power on the newer 450's are more electric feeling. The 07 - 08 models have quite a hard hit in the mid range.

Very true. I sold my 08' CRF450 about 6 months ago....and it was about a perfect bike as you could get.....except the suspension! I never could get it working the right way for me. But the fit and feel of that 08' Honda was absolutley amazing!

Look up a guy on here called " Mickelobe7"......he has had his 08' for quite a few months...and he can testify how good of a bike that thing is. " In my opinion "........way freakin' better than the 09' and 10' Honda's.....which i hated. The 11' was really good , and the 12'?....... Probably the only other Honda I would of put above my 08'. The 12' is an incredible bike!

Great advice here Jeffro, really appreciate it! I had a friend who races moto tell me the same thing, that with my height/weight, I should get the 450.

I really need to try them both out but I don't know anyone who has them. Wonder if dealerships offer free test rides...

Also, you are talking about the F model, I was looking at getting the 450r or 250r. Any thoughts on that?

I am looking at 2009 and newer models because of fuel injection. Any thoughts?

I'm talking about the full on race models....I think they are " R" models? I think Honda removed the " F " from the name didn't they? It's something like CR450R now?

So used to calling a 4 stroke an " F " model.....I get lost in the times.

And look into what MXB posted above. Some bike manif's offer ride days. Great way to test some different stuff out.

An old wise saying says Buy junk ya get junk. imo ride a demo day, make a bike choice, find a new leftover model, all current bikes are good. consider, dealer, parts how long you gonna keep it etc. resale value, Life is short enjoy it , work hard play hard.

Damn! I just checked your area Greg and the bike prices are kind of high. Especially for this time of the year. Be willing to possibly travel north a little , as i think you may be able to pick up a beter bike for a cheaper price. Just for referance , i sold this 08' Honda CRF450 about 6 months ago for I think $3300.00. I sold it in the end of spring and got about 20 calls on it in 24hrs , two of them were at full price of $3300.00. I would think you could find something like a used 2012 for around $3800 - $4200.00 if you keep you eyes peeled.

Because the power delivery is more forgiving ,

I use the clutch to apply power to the rear wheel,a finger is always ready to take power away if a jump face is slick or the bike starts to step out. This technique is from years of 2 strokes.

A lot of riders rely on just the engine response,no finger on the clutch ,just twisting the throttle and trying to time the hit of power and hoping it doesn't step out on the face of a table that some flagger just water with a hose.

If that 2nd description is you then a 250 will kept you on 2 wheels a lot more.

I would suggest a 250f first. You can haul ass on one just like a 450 but with much more room for error. You won't get board on one. They are a kick in the pants to ride. After a season or two get a 450.

I personally would recommend a 250. Imo your gonna have more fun and it will be a better bike to learn on. A lot of beginners don't realize how fast and powerful a 450 is. For you a 250 should have plenty of power for now.

Fwiw.....concerning the three guys above my last post....I disagree.

From my experience if you are going to keep a bike for a couple years or more , the 250F's are bad investments. You can get 3 X ( or more ) longevity out of a 450 motor than you can a 250F. I have rarely seen one get past 25-30hrs before the thing needs to be rebuilt. If you ride a lot....that gets expensive real quick. It is NOT uncommon to get 100+ hours out of a 450 if you take care of it.

The 250F's are very fun bikes indeed.....but in the long run , more expensive to keep running. And anyone that thinks they can get the mileage out of a 250F that can a 450F.......please tell me I'm wrong.

The only reason I ride a 450 is for vet racing. 250F is more forgiving and handles a lot better. Just more fun in general.

A 250 and a 450 can both be ridden at moderate speeds but it takes some skill to go fast on a 250. You can fumble around a corner and make up ground down the staights on a 450. If you've got corner speed a 250 is not a real disadvantage. The small bike is definately less tiring to ride. The bottom line is probably suspension set up more than displacement.
