What a shocker. I'm sure a guy like him, in the zone, could compete on a 250 and do as well.

Why would they care? Even if the thing was a punched out 449, is that not legal?

Did they actually tear it down? What were they looking for?

Didi they find the rocket motor he uses on the start?

AC is one of the best starters there is, Lets take 100cc away from Alessi and see how he does then...

Guys lets keep it simple. We have seen so many times the 250's turn faster laps than the 450's. So saying a 350 can't win is simply a lack of understanding. If a 250 can beat 450's than a 350 might just be the perfect size. Maybe not for all riders but for some.

Oh and fellows.........the last outdoors race that Alessi won running away was on a 350 if I remember it correctly? Hangtown 2010 I think and it was 2nd moto. Since then he has only won one moto and that was because dungy fell down twice I think at Washougal 2012.

I forgot about that - was Mike on a 350 at that race?

In Mike's defense though, AC's bike was the real works machine, not a modified stocker like KTM USA's bike.

Nagl used to be known for his great starts, while riding for KTM he was the Alessi of the GPs. Thats him on a factory 450, behined Alessi on his 350.

How often do you have the traction to truly take advantage of every HP? The jump at the gate is far more important than a couple HP one way or the other.

i'm pretty sure in the shootout they said the 14 350 makes equal if not more power than the crf450

I remember seeing RC at High Point when he was running the 12-13 class turn faster laps than the 250As on Saturday. 100ccs don't matter much when you know how to ride a bike.

Although I don't care if he's on a 250/350/450 bike as he's clearly the fastest in the class regales of CC, did anyone else notice that the GP where they pulled his engine down was the same GP he had terrible starts and sub-par finishes...just saying.

Having heard it track side, it does sound different to the 450's & not always believed the conspiracy 450 theories!

The point you guys all seem to be missing, is that if KTM ran the bike as a 400+ cc, but marketed it as a 350cc bike, that would be marketing GENIUS by KTM, yet still completely legal for racing. A lot of people believed that was the case, when in fat, it apparently is not.

From KTM...

KTM RACING WELCOMES FIM’S BIKE ENGINE CONTROL OF THE KTM 350 SX-F

KTM Racing announces that it has welcomed the move by the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) to officially control and verify the engine size of the bike used by the current leader in the MXGP-class World Championship, KTM Factory Rider Antonio Cairoli. FIM made the control on the racing bike engine used by Cairoli in Sunday’s MXGP of Spain at Talavera de la Reina.

Following the day’s racing activities, officials from FIM made a thorough control and officially verified that Cairoli’s machine, which successfully competes against the bigger 450cc bikes in the MXGP World Championship, is, as it is correctly branded, a 350cc-displacement racing bike.

Speaking of the control, Pit Beirer, Head of KTM Motorsports said: “We very much welcome this move by the FIM officials because it is important for our company image, and for our international reputation that Tony’s factory bike not only complies with FIM rules, but also that it is verified as a 350 cc.” Beirer said customers, rivals and most important, the sport’s governing body should have the official assurance that the bike in question conforms to the size as stated on the machine’s official specifications and is completely in line with FIM regulations.

Pit Beirer: “We also want our customers to know that for KTM it is it naturally vital that with the 350cc SX-F, what they see is what they get. The fact that Tony (Cairoli) has competed so successfully on the 350 SX-F since he joined our factory team in 2010 is a tribute to his exceptional riding skills. It goes without saying that also underlines KTM’s ongoing commitment to R&D and the deployment of technical expertise that is second to none.”

Cairoli, of Italy secured his seventh world title in 2013 and leads the points in the 2014 edition of the MXGP World Championship. He has won four consecutive world titles in the big bike category on the KTM 350 SX-F since joining the official KTM factory team and KTM Racing wishes him all the very best for the remainder of the 2014 Season.

van Horebeek YZF says 450... but the rumor is that it is a 400. still plenty fast. Cairoli in his Yamaha days was also racing a smaler 450. 400 or 380 something.

Cairoli's 350 is a special one, runs like hell with the light Sicilian.

So whats next. Of coarse the 350 which develops its peak HP far higher in the rpms than a 450 can holeshot. The rear tire is spinning faster and the bike is lighter. So, is everybody trying to prove that TC can't be that good? He is beating 450's so he must be cheating, right. I remember years ago O'mara beating the Open class World champ on a 125 at the MXDN. The strip down of TC's engine was a great publicity prop for KTM who already sells more 350's than any of their other bikes. In the US, why haven't the KTM riders on 350s been successful? Because the riders have been Andrew Short, Mike Alessi., not championship riders. They didn't finish any worse than on prior 450's. I would like to see Dungey and Roczen spend time / get used to riding a 350 and see what their results are.

It was first race Cairoli didnt win for long time.. just saying..

In MXGP you can ride any size " over 290cc up to 450cc for 4 stroke engines"

This is just a commercial deal from the FIM to KTM. To prove you can holeshot with the 350 KTM compared to japanese 450's. Rattray runs the same engine on the Husky.
The 350 or 450 sticker is just for commercial purposes nothing to do with regulations.

3 rounds ago he didn't win in Arco di Trento

AC struggles more on natural and real tracks with less man made obstacles than in the more prepared by machine tracks, thats why he's beatable on those type of tracks like Arco di Trento, Telavera , Maggiora etc

not saying he can't win on them but just a lot harder for him on those tracks.

on those tracks the old school riders likes Desalle, Paulin, Van Horebeek, Strijbos excel
