The 2 stroke Cairoli was scheduled to race in Italy , before the death of his mother.
I get a lot of names wrong now - I've such a jumble of racing recollections in my scone, nowadays. Thanks for the pictures, and the info that helps me straighten up the jumble!
That he then, the next week still showed up to race the MXDN, was a show of enormous strength / depth of character.
He had a prang in the first corner of his first moto ( with Deano?), and then had his handlebar mounts break off going into / jumping across one of the up hill turns at St Jeanne - lucky in his bad luck, as if it would have happened on the following DH jump, it could have been fearful. Broken wrist, I think from either of those two incidents. The MXDN has been feast or famine for AC, yet he almost always lines up for his country - no excuses.
Then loosing his father, Benedetto, less than 2 weeks before the 2014 Matterley Basin British GP - to take it outright with a 1-2. He probably would have gone 1-1, but had to back it down with his rear wheel starting to collapse - bearing , hub, or spokes, I can't recall.
He's far more than 'just' a Multi times World Champion.
Quite a 'Kit', that.
I wonder what engine(s) Georges Jobe used in the year, or part of a year, that he rode a Yamaha in the 500 GPs? I think it was the 1990 season, before he got back onto a Honda to win the 91 and 92 World 500 Championships. In the video of that season ( you can get the 5 season - 86 to 90 - 500 GP boxed set from Duke Marketing for only about 33 / 37 Brit Pounds - it's well worth it) they first mention he's on a 360, and it sure sounds like one, but later you see him on a Water Cooled Yamaha that sounds much less of a revver than the 360. Maybe he used this kit as well?

The following week I think was the Vets des Nations at Farliegh, where I spoke with him again, and he was in Mettet for the Starbiker the following week , doing some commentary work,
This year I got the job of doing the live feed Freecaster Commentary, and the Georges Jobe trophy is given to the top Belgian rider, which was presented by Georges brother Claude, who rode a legends lap on one of Georges bikes. Was a nice thing to talk about, and its a shame I never got the chance to interview him.
AC has never been lucky at the MxoN , I would dearly have loved to see him on the 250
Yz500/jpx stuff.
I think it was the same corner where Pourcel came around / pulled off with his tyre hanging off the rim? That was a damned shame, as he was on a mission, and looked headed to win.
I caught the tail end of AC's prang, and saw the bars hanging off and him trying to get the bike up. The first thought (well, other than f******k) I had is what if the mounts / bolt / whatever that broke, had broken off over the jump(s) down the hill. I changed my 10mm mount bolts on my WP CCs I have on my old Honda, to 12mm ones, to go in from below ( mainly so I don't have to undo the bars from the X Trig PSD mounts when I'm doing front end work, I really don't think I'd ever break the 10s) after that.
I'm trying to get to Matterley ( and a few other events around it, like the VMX DN) this year - might just see how many of you Pommie Bastards from here I can meet up with. I'm sure you're all a bunch of reprobates, and not to be trusted near my Danish Nieces I'll be travelling with .......
They did kits with diaphragm controlled power valves.
I'm sure there'd be a few Air Hammer owners that would kill for one of those.
I am hoping to race Farliegh again, on a super Evo, but I am supposed to be away in Germany for the final race of my championship on the same day as the MXoN.. I missed Maggiora last year for the same reason.
Hopefully I can get the job done well enough to drop the last round, we will have to see.
