F-150 fake engine noise

Edited Date/Time 2/18/2015 6:19pm
So new F-150s have fake engine sounds. Will someone here blame Obama?

From Washington Post:

Stomp on the gas in a new Ford Mustang or F-150 and you’ll hear a meaty, throaty rumble — the same style of roar that Americans have associated with auto power and performance for decades.

It’s a sham. The engine growl in some of America’s best-selling cars and trucks is actually a finely tuned bit of lip-syncing, boosted through special pipes or digitally faked altogether. And it’s driving car enthusiasts insane.

Fake engine noise has become one of the auto industry’s dirty little secrets, with automakers from BMW to Volkswagen turning to a sound-boosting bag of tricks. Without them, today’s more fuel-efficient engines would sound far quieter and, automakers worry, seemingly less powerful, potentially pushing buyers away.

I heard Harley tried to patent the "potato, potato, potato" sound of their V-twins at idle. Because they were pissed about the Japanese copies. But I think that failed.

This is different. A digital, fake sound.

I still drive a 98 F-150, and that shitty sound you hear coming down the road is all real, baby!

I might actually be in the market for some fake engine noise...

My wife's BMW has a fake rattle/jingling noise in the drivetrain that is tuned to the sound of $1000.00 swipes of the credit card every time I take it in to get checked out.

If the bike mfgs can tune a four stroke to sound like a 2 stroke, they may be on to something. Bel Ray can make a fortune selling bean oil scented fuel additives.

I can't decide if Jeremy Clarkson is crying or laughing. Might be both.

Actually, Suzuki and Kawasaki were sued by Harley for making their bikes sound too similar, as Harley attempted to trademark it's sound. After 6 years of legal proceedings, no resolution was reached, though Harley claimed victory to the public.

I've heard the 3.5 with and without the fake engine noise. If I didn't know any better I would've thought the truck was a V8 from the engine sound. It's really that believable. I thought I was going to hate it, but was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't not buy one because of it, if that makes sense.

My girlfriend just started working at a Harley dealership as the marketing director. They want to push towards black people and to the younger crowd...yet their bikes cost a ton and offer no sport package that's worth a damn on a track with curves.

Not that this has anything to do with the original post. My A.D.D. must have just kicked in for the day.

I thought it was just a tube that pumped sound into the cab.

It's actual engine noise being piped in through the speakers, it pretty closely matches engine speed and load. The sound tubes have been used for many years by a bunch of manufacturers. Ford used them on the Focus and Mustang. This is the first time Ford has used the speakers for engine noise.

BMW has used the speakers to provide engine noise for several years, and denied it until recently.

Speaking of trucks, as anybody seen Ken Block's completely insane Raptortrax? This thing is off the charts:

Yes and largely due to the fact electric bikes are coming.

If they ever reach critical mass as far as market penetration I bet you a dollar they'll be generating engine noise. Newmann and I would be on electric bikes sounding like 300cc two strokes but this would be only after no more parts would be available to support us on two strokes.

What would be your sound of choice for an electric bike?

Most of the time I don't even have the radio turned on. Does that mean I wouldn't get to hear the V8 rumble from my V6?

Actually its the exact opposite. The Harley guys throw away the ultra restrictive and quite exhaust and replace them with more conventional and yes much louder aftermarket pipes. But Harley guys are digitally altering the sound like the article talks about.

It's always there, radio playing music or not. At least on the BMW's, somebody figured it out by physically pulling the radio fuse.
