The line between dual sport and motocross/off road models is getting smaller and smaller and I couldn't be happier. The 2017 EXC-F and FE lines have seriously got me excited to buy a bike. For my money the 500 is the way to go but they are now offering a 250, 350, 450 as well as the 500 in dual sport models in all 50 states... Let the fun begin
I have no association with these companies just happy to see some more options coming for all of us.

'07 EXC 525
'09 EXC 530
'14 EXC 500 (still have)
I have my name on the '17 EXC 500, I can't wait. I talked to a couple of the guys that tested them all and they confirmed it is an even better bike than the current model.

The Shop
One 60 mile ride on the interstate from charlotte and I bought a klr.
Sure they are a bit heavy for off road, but so much better on the road.
Dream bike is one of the BMW 1200 dual sports. Man, those things are just awesome.
I am going to buy a powerball ticket and cross my fingers.
This big ole beast gets it done
2016 Beta 500 RS
I have needed 0 parts or warranty the 1st year.
Pit Row
Of course, the majority of us, are 'criminals', and ride with most of the stuff having fallen off....... Though, in my case, my 500 has (midget) blinkers , fold away mirrors, horn and full lights on it all of the time - I don't want to give the cops a chance to ping me.
I've read blokes bleating that they shouldn't have to pay for the road stuff now coming on your XC-Ws / EXCs. Well, I'd say KTM might have done a study of costs, and found it cheaper to not have a separate packing / spec'ing of bikes. Sounds bizarre to those that may not know of cost amortization, but that's how things can go.
It's why , when KTM / other manufacturers release whatever tech they have to put into use after Jan 1 2017, for Euro legislation, those 'solutions' will filter to bikes for even "race use only", quicker than many think. Separate specs, can end up being more costly than doing a far higher number to the same . or very close specification. .And heck, those 'solutions'; may even get 2ts (of all sorts) back on the roads in some markets, where they have been missing from for ages
I even moto'd it a few times on a pretty tame Saturday night track and was competitive.
Did a handful of hare scrambles too. You don't have to do the "whoo whoo!" when you come up on a slower rider, beep the horn a couple times and you can see the WTF reaction as they pull out of the way. lol
Great for exploring all those places you see in your area that aren't worth hauling a dirt only bike to.
I'm in the market for another but trying to decide if I should wait for the 2017 or just get the proven 2016 will all of the knowledge base out there.
It was a tough decision between the Husky FE501 and the Beta 500RS. If I were to do it again, I'd probably go with the Beta just for the BYOB program.
I'm still riding ol' Betsy--2002 520 EXC.
I have five motorcycles and can only spread the love (dough) so far.
So a new dual sport bike is out of the question in the immediate future but my KTM has taken me to some amazing places so I can't complain too much...
After a long day in the saddle the local Brothel is always a welcome sight.
The Long Way Home
Oh Yea? Support the local dealer you say?
Hmmm I can also order it myself too....now I get a not so common part but my old parts manager (circa 2002) would've shot us in the head if we didnt stock at least 1 of each OEM letter piston i.e. A, B, C, D. for any line we carried and at the shop I worked at we had pretty much all of them (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki) ..... One time a few years ago I strolled into a Honda only dealer and had to order a current gen (at the time) CRF Oil Filter and Rear Fender...The fender I can ever so slightly (.001%) agree on but the oil filter order left me speechless.
