Because there are 40 black kids in Baltimore Maryland that can do the same thing. Hate to say it, probably better.

Doug was almost as cool as David Bailey to a kid racing in the 1980s.

I doubt it. I watched him wheelie around the entire RedBud track once. That must have been tough.

I don't know if he always had a special bike but when I watched, he had something to spin his front tire to help with centrifugal (sp?) force? I have a headache now...

I saw him wheelie a three wheeler across two metal cables strung up between the rafters across an old convention center in Denver in the early 80's. Pretty cool....

Must have been 1975-76 , saw DD, Ray Ritchie, and another guy at the St.Pete round of the Winter-Am on Maicos doing their thing. At that time, all were equally adept at the wheelie skills.

DD was the man for sure. I remember seeing him ride a wheelie around High Point one year. It was like a dream to me to see him ride in person. Still the only intermission show that had ever had me glued to the fence. In those few years and as a kid, he was every bit the rock start as David Bailey. At least he was to me.
I still remember breaking my left arm in 4 places and having the bone stick out trying to emulate a fender drag on a very very pipey 86' RM80. I tried it slow at first like he always did but I didn't have enough speed to bring it back down. I crashed and burned trying it in 3rd gear. God Damn that hurt.

I got to meet him at the 1980 Hillclimb Nationals. He rode a wheelie all over the facility up and over cars etc and then tackled the 500' hill and he was able to wheelie about half of it only and he was frustrated because he thought he could do the whole hill but it wasn't in the cards as it was just too steep at the top. He sure was talented.

Like a lot of you already said, DD was a full on Moto Rockstar. I loved watching that cat do his thing and was lucky enough to meet him a couple times at Indian Dunes. My pops like to call him a cheater 'cause he had the motor in in his front wheel to keep it spinning, but every time I lifted my front wheel up on my dirt bike or bicycle I was channelling DD. I also remember being glued to that , "That's Incredible" episode . It was on ABC right after Monday Night Football if I remember correctly . Good times!

My old man could wheelie this thing a full tank of gas. He has done many tracks. Roy Turner seen my dad Brian Austin and said he was one of the smoothest he had ever seen.

Doug was the best I've ever seen at the art of wheelieing. Back in 1977 I saw him wheelieing a stock 250 Kaw (T-Shirt, no helmet) across the parking lot at Kaw, 5th gear, pull in the clutch and kill the engine, then bump start it while staying in the perfect wheelie. He did it several times as some of the Kaw employees came out to watch. He made it look easy.

Not a chance, pavement has no resistance on the back wheel to see some skill on how Doug made it work. Jumps whoops ruts...ect? give me a break.
Doug wrote the book. Sure one day a young man will come along but I have yet to see it.

Anybody have that Wide world of sports flick where Doug Domokos was in a wheelie contest against a dozen other guys? They had to ride a wheelie for one mile and the first one to finish was the winner. Took place in the desert somewhere I think and they got up to speeds of 70 MPH on the back wheel...Grinning

i think it was 1982 1983 right around then me and pete hames and rob ely went to simpson helmets for a photo shoot and ended up at ascot park talking to chris agajannian he said doug was over at the track trying to break the world record .it was pretty cool they had a gas truck that would go along the track beside him and he would put gas in the bike while riding a wheelie .he had the little motor that kept the front wheel spinning which is very important we were there for a couple hours watching in between slick track races and he never sat the front end down once .every two laps wouldve been a mile .cant remember if he set the record that day or not
