Ok flamers! Lets go!

I love building stuff or I wouldnt really consider option 1 probably but here it goes.

Option 1: A bone stock 2001 CR125 for $1200 (you cant buy them for $700 here like in other parts, you just cant) AND THEN spend the money for Tusk wheels, a plastic update, renthal bars, sprockets and chain, seat, grips, rebuild the top end and have $3000 in it OR!!!................

Option 2, pick up a used 2010 CRF250 FI thats been raced but is not ragged that already has all the goodies for the same $3000 out the door.

After seeing all these cr125 builds Id love to do one but then again, I love the 4bangers as well. Keep in mind, these are just going to be funzy bikes, Im old, just trail ride and some track time here local.

Whatcha thank?

The CR125 for sure. I also have a 2001. It will more fun to ride plus the fun to build. Not to mention you will be spending money on the other bike to change little things anyways.

2 stroke all day...cheaper to maintain.

Once that 2010 goes might as well get a new bike.

Nice! Keep them coming! I bit surprised so far! I did my first top end job on a 1986 CR80 from a MXA Magazine at the age of TWELVE! My dad never thought it would run again but I showed him. Lets go!

My experience with buying previously raced bikes is that they usually end up being money pits. If you're worried about the 250f being a money pit, just get the two-stroke since it obviously is a money pit already, and once it's done it'll probably last three times as long as the 250f would.

125 all day long. Once you've finished building it, you will know the history of the bike and what it needs to stay on top of it. You'll also be bonded to it in a way that you won't be with 'somebody else's' race bike.

There is never any real guarantee of how much work a used bike has done, and the moment that 250f decided to drop a valve or whatever, you will be glad you went with the 2 stroke. You might be lucky and it will be fine for however long you own it, but you'll forever be thinking about it letting go. I know I do.

If you are just play riding I would go for the 125. Two strokes are way easier and much cheaper to maintain.

Dead on 2T!

I swear to me the build would be the best part! Im leaning toward the 125, just would love for it to be an 02 for plastics sakes. I hear that adapting the newer plastics is the hardest for 00-01's but who cares. Worst case, Ill go new stock plastics everywhere and do a 2014 stadium front number plate and front fender FTW!!!! lol

Option 3:
http://boston.craigslist.org/sob/mcy/5653770071.html

Get a nice older model yz250 for around 3k. This is the first one I saw searching near you so I'm sure there are others.

Pro-Tip: Use searchtempest.com and search multiple craigslist cities efficiently (direct results mode works best).

I love four-strokes.

But I would be worried about a 6 year old 250F going BOOM and a rod ends up through the case. Unless its a really low hour or recently rebuilt motor (top and bottom), I'd go 125.

while i'm firm on my position on 2 strokes being the bees knees, save your money and don't even consider the CR125, talk about a turd of a bike. only Honda 125 worth buying is probably on a showroom and says Elsinore on it.

Hmmm, a seven year old Honda 250F, what could go wrong?

Better save up another $3k for the inevitable grenade.

I recently picked up a 2005 RM125 for $1500. Engine is getting turned into a 144, suspension just came back from Factory Connection, frame was powder coated, all new bearings, plastic,...you get the idea. I guess that answers what I would do. When done, I'll basically have a new bike. Had I gone the 250 4t route (and I considered it) I would have an old bike at a similar price point. And there is no way on earth a 250 4t is as easy and fun to ride as a 125!

I saw that. Gosh that's $471! I think I'll throw on a stadium plate and new 2001 graphics if I get it. Spend that other money on other parts.

Always wondered how could riding a roach such as a 125 CR could be considered fun. Were already crappy in their day.
If you like 125s, get one with an engine.
