Where did you get the photo? I wouldn't be in a museum would it? Looks familiar.

I got it off of someone else in a different forum... It looks like the pic is from the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, England

Good question. Probably the same reason cars had drum brakes for so long....whatever that reason was.
Kawasaki was the first major manufacturer to put a front disc on a mx bike, and it took two more years for the others to follow. Rear discs didn't come for about another 4 years later.

another question would be: Why is it taking the manufacturers so long to move the countershaft sprocket to the swingarm pivot (ala BMW)? It would eliminate some suspension woes caused by chain torque. Think about Bob Hannah's 1986 Boyesen link equipped RM250 he rode at Unadilla.

What year did Kaw put discs on their mx bikes? I remember seeing a pull start Rokon in 74 or 75 with disc brakes during the Fla. Winter-Ams.

82' KX's came with front disc brakes. Yes, Rokon had them much earlier, but Kawasaki was the first major manufacturer to use them.

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew I saw them on something else long before the KX's. I started riding the KX 250 and 500 when I was 15(1982). I didn't remember discs brakes on Kaw's before then so it was my first year with them too. I remember thinking how good the discs were. It took me a few races to get used to them.

look to the other side of the rim, it looks like another rim type thing. That may be the drive.

82' KX125:

76' Rokon had front and rear brakes (I think the 75' did also):

Yeah, like the sprocket is nearly as big as the rim.

i think that may be for the gearing to push start it. It may be before kick starters. I could be wrong but there was one like that at the museum i went to.

Yep I remember that also JC. I remember him doing one hand wheelies in practice at Hyatt or Hollywood Speedway. In 1976 that was big stuff.Smile
