the reason I ask is because I looked at some early pics and the bikes look like the pipe and silencer are one piece on some bikes and the others look like thet don't even have a silencer. I had to get a custom made pipe for my bike and the end of the pipe comes all the way out the back.

40 unmuffled 2 stokes leaving the line was LOUD!!!but it was f#@%$ing cool!!! My 72 tm 250 didnt come with a silencer,by then most tracks required them.I put a $10 J&R silencer on the old Suzuki, which is what almost everybody was runnig then.

i wonder if the people who made your custom pipe just carried the tail end after the expansion chamber way out, s you could cut it to length.

First MX's I went to were naked stingers; very pretty pipes, very loud. Very. 71 Trans Ama was unsilenced; 72 was silenced. The "Less Sound/More Ground" movement was in effect.

Robert and Geboers in 71:

And not just in moto. You really haven't heard anything until you've heard an old unsilenced TZ125 or TZ250 come on the pipe. Saw a Banshee in Mexico last spring that had really nice chrome chambers with naked stingers. Bet it sounded nice.

1972 was the last year most OEMs didn't have silencers equipped on stock MX bikes I believe.

Think Bassani was the first aftermarket silencer mfg starting also in '72, maybe earlier, just don't remember.

I still haven't bought a computer so no photos. My wife has been bitching at me about buying one so I will soon. It is a 1980 kx125. In the photos it looks like the silencer and the pipe are connected. I just googled 1980 kx125 to see what it originally looked like.

haha yea man '80 125s definitely had silencers. pretty sure DG made a sweet aftermarket one too.

Who made your pipe? Here's a pic of an 80 model.

My '75 with the down-pipe had a "permanent" silencer at the end of the pipe. It didn't silence too gawddamm much. I was into roadracing at the time, as well. There is no sound in the world like a TZ750 with nothing but stingers.

That's so funny, Bronson. I was going to look this up and post it. If that doesn't make your skin shrink and your hair come to life, nothing will.

I watch that about 3 times a week. It's my youtube Zen moment. That along with Wayne Rainey/Kevin Schwantz/Wayne Gardner/John Kocinski 500cc GP battles.

No, no, no, no, no. That scares the shit out of me, and I have the 500AF. That thing must be a beast.

My ex and I "honeymooned" at the last FIM world championship F-1 race held in North America. Roberts, Ceccotto, Baldwin, Aksland, DuHamel (Sr.), 750s ... and the world sidecars. Sounds...smells...that's what makes the blood flow even this many years after.

Always did. Those were the days of the AMA Grand National Championship. Imagine riders doing the "multi-discipline" thing these days. We can't even get all our motocrossers to ride both SX and outdoor.

Even Bayle in '93 never made it up to the 500cc class. and I don't think he ever won a 250cc race. Maybe 1 pole.

It just amazes me that after all these years Kel Curruthers and crew can dig either of those bikes out, throw on the Yellow Yamaha shirts, and Kenny can ride it, STILL. Like they never quit. Guys like Valentino and Colin Edwards stand there with their jaws on the floor.

On a side note, I really hope Valentino got that Ducati together this winter.

Roberts was/is such a GD badass on two wheels and that bike was pure evil! Wonder if Val wanted to ride it?

Roberts epitomizes a motorcycle racer. God bows to KR.

A friend has an old TZ750 road racer in his collections. Would love for him to start it up someday, hasn't been run in years.
