Seeing the thread the other day about the sucker trying to paint his own TLD SE helmet)poor helmet!), and seeing the picture of a Bob's Krazy Brush job, it just got me thinking about a wonderful time when a custom painted helmet was a STATUES SYMBOL!
Does anyone remember Ric Duppstadt? Jim Martin you might remember him... he did all of Johnny's helmets. Excellent painter. http://helmetpaint.com/Bio.html is his website, check some of it out.
My FAVORITE custom paint job of all time was a Carmichael helmet from about 1991 that was painted by some place called No Limit out of Florida I guess... I asked RC about it one year in St. Louis and he laughed and asked how I could remember it! It had these crazy neon oolors and this insane purple monster looking like The Maxx and these red tentacles going around the helmet... if anone has a shot of that I'll give them $10 for a copy of it.
Here is one of my favorite designs below... if anyone has any awesome pics of tricked out custom paint jobs, especially TLD stuff, please post!

I too am a big fan of the custom painted helmet and wish they would make a comeback. Unfortunately with all the gear companies making their own helemts I think the days are gone. Too much money for them to pay a rider and not use their design.
It also seems that many of the graphic companies (vinyl) are starting to make wraps for helemts I think. I see some NASCAR helmets that are far too good on the line work to be real. I'm gonna check this weekend and find out. Kurt Busch,Bowyer and Kasey Kahne I think use them. Kasey's helemt is a Troy Lee so I amy be wrong but damn that line work is good!
Some of my favorites are the old bradshaw helemts before he went to his "standard" scheme. One of his early helemts i still use as a base that I use for mine. To anyone out there that is thinking about doing it I have had good succes with a Pasche VL airbrush and a variety of paints. I will usually use Createx Auto Air but you have to be careful laying your scheme out. It lifts real ease before you clear it so I generally don't get too crazy. Its water based so I take comfort in knowing that it won't affect the integrity of the shell so that is why I choose to use it.There is tons of info now on the internet that allows a person to learn alot of the old school techniques. Gold and silver leaf are actually pretty easy once you read up on it.
Many of the old MXA magazines used to do showcases of riders helemts that is really good referance. Unfortunately, I don't have time to post them but best of luck to anyone going for it and good spraying. That Rossi? helemt is pretty cool.
Not MX, but funny and a nice paint job!
and one of his.

I'm wearing his Bell Moto-8 Pyscho Manic replica design at the moment and love the helmet and the paint job!
