On November 3, 2009 Christian Craig had a crash at the KTM supercross track that lead to a broken back. Soon before the accident Christian signed with Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda supercross team. Christian was riding the 2009 race bike for the last time before he made the jump to the 2010 on Wednesday. While practicing, the bike locked up off the lip of the jump and threw him off the bike. As Christian hit the ground the bike came flipping towards him and hit him in the back. Immediately after the crash, for approximately forty-five minutes, Christian did not have any feeling from the waist down. Once the ambulance arrived they placed Christian on a stretcher and Christian began to receive a tingling sensation is his left leg. On the way to the hospital Christian regained some feeling in his right leg as well.
The CT scan showed that his L2 and L3 were completely separated, instead of them being lined up how they are supposed to be, they were side by side. The L5 and S1 were also shown to be shattered.
On the day of his accident, Christian was then later booked for a surgery. The surgery lasted eleven hours, in which the doctor put screws and rods completely down the spine. They also bolted his spine to his hipbone on both sides to hold his spine in place and to keep Christian unable to bend his back until he is completely healed. Once Christian has fully recovered this will be removed.
The doctor revealed that the surgery was successful, but unfortunately it will still take up to a year for Christian to heal and for the screws and rods to be removed as well. Christian has been in the ICU since the completion of his surgery and is under a large amount of pain. Christian is very worried and scared. He needs all the support he can possibly receive during this time. Christian should be making the move from the ICU today (November 6, 2009) and will then start therapy. He will most likely be in the hospital for a minimum of ten days. It isn’t clear what lies ahead, but Christian, his family, and his friends are taking everything one day at a time. All the support from everyone will help to raise his spirits.
Christian is not mad nor is he blaming anyone for what happened. Everybody at TLD has been very supportive and they are doing everything they can to help his recovery. Christian has a long recovery process ahead.
As of November 13, 2009, Christian moved to Ballard’s Rehabilitation Center in San Bernardino, CA.
UPDATE: Yesterday (November 17th) Christian was told that he will be in the rehabilitation center for another 2 weeks. He still hasn't regained sensation in his right leg. He can move it and put pressure on it but he can't feel himself doing it. His left leg is way stronger than his right leg. He walked again today (November 18th) with a walker, but still needs support on his knees from the therapist. The therapist also has to somewhat help him move his right leg forward. The support from his family and friends that have come to visit Christian has been a HUGE motivation to him. We appreciate all of the prayers, thoughts, and visits from everyone!
Through this rough time, Christian and his family are going to need as much support as possible. There are many ways one can donate. Below are the following options to help out the Craig family.
www.road2recovery.com
• Any Wells Fargo bank (All you have to do is mention the account name and the donations will go straight to Christian, ACCT: Christian Craig Medical Fund)
• Buy a T-Shirt, wristband, or sticker (all of these items have the saying “We Believe… Christian Craig #72)
• Donate an item to road2recovery.com for the eBay auction.
As Christian’s friends, we are trying to do anything we can to help Christian and his family out. Anything will help right now. Christian’s mother is not able to work due to his condition. Please help us give the Craig family the donations needed to help pay their bills. Such as, their living expenses as well as providing them with food and other necessities. This money will not only be helping with the previous mentioned expenses, but it will also be used for post therapy costs once Christian is released and ready to go home. Please keep Christian Craig in your prayers and thank you for the support.

For any inquires on how to help out the Craig family or to donate by buying a wristband, t-shirt, or sticker, please don’t hesitate to contact Nicole or Tawni at believeincc@yahoo.com.

hey guys,

Christian needs all the help he can get right now. TLD and his sponsors are doing what they can, but his mother hasn't been able to work since this happened and it's going to be a costly recovery.

i know we've been seeing this kind of thing way to often, but anything you can do will help him and his family.

thanks in advance for all your guys support.

DC, Andrew from Vurb and Swap if you read this -- can you guys put something up with the road to rovery link?

I get tears reading this ... flashbacks of Justin's accident which is just under two months now. Christian has family around him, and the entire motocross family has him in their hearts.

Just fight man, and never give up. You WILL get through this. Its not fun, its scary, and you would think I could tell you something after going through this but there is no words .... Just fight and BELIVE, we are all pulling for you. Take it day by day and I support your recovery 100% I will do everything I can, we are there for you #72!

Christian, you made a great impression when you visited us up at Valli and although it didn't work out for our team it enabled you to get on JGR, all things happen for a reason. You've got a phenomenal amount of people pulling for you and we all wish you a speedy, healthy recovery.
