I thought it had to do with discount tire not selling Dunlop tires, so they decided to switch?
I could be wrong though.

Here is the million dollar question. Can you even walk into a Discount Tire establishment and purchase a Pirelli on the spot for a dirt bike?

If not, it's all a waste in my opinion.

Would Chad Reed being sponsored by Discount Tire/America's Tire influence your automotive tire purchasing decisions?

Yes. I'm making a conscious effort to attend the Soaring Eagle/RCH race Saturday because the Casino stepped up and sponsored a team after having no previous affiliation with the sport. I appreciate that and will support them because of that.

With the tires.... I guess my point is this:

Discount sells Dunlops, so to me, unless they plan on selling Pirelli mx tires in store, it's shouldn't matter which brand Chad utilizes. Either way, Discount will sell me a tire from their team sponsorship of Two Two Motorsports. That's why I think it's pointless.... They sell both brands.

If Chad wanted the switch, cool..... If he had a falling out with Dunlop.... Cool. But I just don't see how the switch benefits Discount/America's Tire.

I gotta say I agree with this.

Less they actually sell Pirelli MX tyres then i'm not really phased, granted it's a somewhat different proposition to normal but in this case it's not the product, it's the company that I would choose to support because of their involvement.

This wasn't a new development. Reed tested Pirelli tires mid-way through last season (2013) at home in Florida.

I thought GuyB explained all this in a Pit Bits photo a while back or something? if I remember right it was because Dunlop doesn't pay anyone to run their tire and Chad was looking for a company that would carry over into his next adventure after moto (4 wheels)

Good for chad. The entire switch could be about what discount tire is pushing and or another relationship with pirelli and or maybe a little performance based. A sponsor relationship with goodyear, perilli, hancook, falkin, dunlop, whatever is good for the sport and a good place for whoever to advertise.

I worked for a tire store when I was younger and tire companies give kickbacks if you sell a certain amount of tires. Yokohama came in and made a push for us to really sell their tires, and if you reached a certain amount, you got a huge lighted Yokohama sign for the shop, reached another amount Yokohama gave the owner a paid vacation while he attended one of their banquets, etc, etc. We earned both of those examples because damn near every car that came in left with Yokohamas. I guess if Pirelli came in and offered Discount Tire some major kickbacks(A LOT more than a vacation) for selling more Pirelli's, it may have been enough for Discount to say "Chad you need to run these tires and we'll increase your sponsorship $XX amount." Just speculation of course, but just because a tire shop sells all the major brands, doesn't mean there isn't some bias between the retailer and a certain tire manufacturer. We sold every major brand, but when someone came in asking what tire we would recommend, it was always "These Yokohamas are great." I worked for a mom and pop outfit, I can only imagine how much more tires Discount would sell and how much larger their incentives to sell a certain brand would be.

Yes, about a month ago I bought a set of tires for my truck. Made sure to leave a note in the comment box letting them know that the only reason I bought from them vs a local tire store was that they supported the sport I love.

I do make purchasing decisions based on a companies involvement in the sport...yes, it needs to be a good product.

Pirelli tires are as good, sometimes better... depending on terrain, as anything-else.

Go talk tires with Andrew Short...he's a Pirelli rider.

Reed is expanding from MX athlete to business man, similar path of other motorsports elite or champs. Discount Tire sponsors Winston Cup champ, Keselowski, can you walk in for tires and buy a Miler Lite? Is that a waste? Where sponsors put their ad/sponsor dollars is up to them, where athletes accept them is the same. If Reed has an offer from one company(free tires and R/D) and another company offers the same PLUS money, he now has a business decision to make. Who are we to judge if he goes against the grain or outside the box, not one tire mfg sponsors the entire series like NASCAR.
Million dollar question, is Discount tire even trying or wanting to sell you a MX tire?

Im more interested to see how Reed gets along with the Pirellis next year in SX where he's been notoriously finicky with set up and tyre feel. That will be the big test in my opinion.

In regards to discount tyre i would hope that anybody with the option to purchase from discount tyres does so to support the industry and justify the investment. People are always complaining about the influence of the energy drinks in the sport, now's the chance with a genuine outside industry sponsor for everyone to do there bit for a company that is supporting the sport. I would if they were here in OZ.
